Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus Evans.
Hi Marcus, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I started acting in Chicago, which is where I’m originally from. After a couple of years of acting in Chicago, I moved to LA. This was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. When I started acting in LA, I came across standup comedy, which has been awesome and has changed my entire career.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Pursuing a career in entertainment isn’t a smooth road for most of us. It’s full of ups and downs, great challenges, and great moments of victory. One of the struggles early on was trying not to do too many things at once, but once I got here, settled down, got organized, and moved forward progressively, it became the greatest ride of my life…
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Like most of us in entertainment, I have a regular job, but thank goodness they have been flexible with me as an actor/comedian. If you do a good job anywhere, you’ll get favor with people. I’ve booked commercials, and I have done standup comedy in LA, San Diego, Las Vegas, etc. I’ve also produced/booked probably a 100 comedy shows, which has opened great doors for me. What sets me apart from others is all my standup comedy material and all of the comedy shows I’ve produced are family-friendly. Additionally, I teach the basics of improv and standup comedy.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
I have a ton of advice. I definitely want to tell anyone who moves to the West Coast to pursue entertainment, to get a good job, and a good place to live 1st and foremost. Then, you can pursue your dreams without these things being a distraction. Then, get organized, put small goals down on paper, and get to work. Make sure you are moving forward on a daily bases little by little. Specifically, if you are an actor, submit to everything on casting networks, take classes, especially improv classes, you’ll meet a lot more people doing improv, and it’s the best acting skill to have. Ask friends to refer you to their agents and managers. This will speed up the process of getting full representation. If you are a standup comic, read a page of the comedy bible every day. This is the most comprehensive book on standup comedy. Do open mics as much as possible to get experience. Go to the Comedy Store and the Hollywood Improv to network and have your face seen. Above all, stick with it; good things will happen. As I’ve mentioned, I’ve had great days, but I’ve had challenging days also. I wouldn’t be where I am today had I stopped. I love the Martin Luther King quote, “If you can’t run, walk, if you can’t walk, crawl, but you just keep moving forward.” Additionally, enjoy LA. I’ve had a great time going to sporting events like Lakers games, Yankees/Dodgers games, Yankees/Angels games, and going to see the NY Giants in San Diego, at Sofi, and in San Jose.
