Check Out Maria Alvarez’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Alvarez.

Hi Maria, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Maria Alvarez. Born in Mexico and raised in Los Angeles, I found my way into beauty during high school in the most unexpected but memorable way—borrowing my sister’s eyelash curler and mascara when she wasn’t looking. She was always my biggest inspiration—her style, her confidence, and the way she wore makeup with intention and ease left a lasting impression on me. What began as a quiet curiosity quickly grew into a lifelong passion. My heritage and upbringing now inspire my artistry, allowing me to bring a unique perspective that celebrates diverse beauty with care and intention.

When she first did a winged liner on me, something clicked. I loved how powerful yet elegant it made me feel. That look became my signature for years. Even now, when a client asks for winged liner, I light up—it’s second nature and feels like a full-circle moment from where it all began.

After relocating frequently while raising my two boys, I realized I needed a career path that offered both flexibility and the ability to grow wherever life took me. That’s when I decided to pursue makeup professionally. I enrolled at Cinema Makeup School in Los Angeles in 2011. At the time, I thought formal education was the only way to become a successful artist. What I quickly learned was that real experience, community, and creativity teach you just as much—if not more. But I don’t regret going at all. I learned a lot about hygiene, technique, and how to maintain a professional kit.

In 2012, I began working for Clinique, and two years later, one of my dream brands hired me—MAC Cosmetics. That role was a game-changer. I absorbed so much from the MAC community: artistry, speed, working with all skin types and tones, and most importantly—how to express creativity with confidence. I continued freelancing on the side, which gave me the freedom to explore my own style and grow my client base.

In 2022, when my daughter was born, I made the decision to leave MAC and focus on building my own business while being a full-time mother. That was a huge transition. Suddenly, I wasn’t just a makeup artist—I became my own social media manager, photographer, accountant, and creative director. Every reel, every client message, every booking—I’m behind it all. It’s exhausting and rewarding at the same time.

Navigating motherhood while running a business is intense, but it’s also incredibly grounding. It’s forced me to become more intentional with my time and my energy. I’m still learning how to balance both roles, but I love that I get to be present for my daughter while doing something that fulfills me.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Juggling all the roles behind the scenes while trying to stay creative has been tough. There are days when I’m drained—mom guilt, creative blocks, burnout—but I always remind myself why I started. I love what I do, and I love that I get to do it my way, even if the path isn’t always easy.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a makeup artist who’s passionate about transformation—not just the physical before-and-after, but the inner confidence that comes through when someone sees themselves in a new light. My goal is never to change how someone looks, but to enhance what’s already there. I specialize in soft glam with a twist of full glam—think clean, glowy skin paired with subtle bold elements that still make a statement.

My style developed naturally through years of experimenting on myself. I wasn’t trained to follow one specific technique or trend, which gave me the freedom to explore what felt right—especially when it came to eyeliner and skin. That personal exploration helped me discover what made me feel confident and elevated, and now I bring that same energy to every client. I want them to look in the mirror and feel like the best version of themselves—not like someone else.

What sets me apart is my attention to detail and the relationships I build. I listen. I care about how my clients want to feel, not just how they want to look. I’m most proud of the trust I’ve built with people who come to me not just for makeup, but for a moment of care, creativity, and confidence.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Start where you are. Use what you have. Don’t wait until your kit is perfect or your lighting is “professional.” Just begin. Focus on progress, not perfection. And don’t be afraid to show who you are—your clients connect with your authenticity, not just your looks. Every artist has a story, and that story is your strength.
