Today, we’d like to introduce you to Mary Satterthwaite.
Mary, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I got started in photography about 15 years ago after my husband bought me my very first digital camera for my birthday.
I started out shooting everything: flowers, dogs, landscapes, and finally came to realize that weddings and family portraits are what really drives me.
My job is such a great marriage of working with people and being creative; it’s literally the BEST job I could think of to fit my personality.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
OOF! Covid had me questioning whether or not the wedding industry as a whole was even going to survive. Somehow, we’ve made it through, but things have definitely changed.
Also, with the current state of inflation in San Diego, people are more hesitant to spend on luxury services like professional photography.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I absolutely LOVE weddings and working with people! Photographers are literally a dime a dozen in the area (and they’re really good, too!). What sets me apart from the crowd is definitely the experience my clients have – I truly have such a blast when I’m in my “photo zone,” as I call it, haha! The best compliment is when I hear my clients say, “That was SO MUCH more fun than I thought it’d be!
We had the best time!” My sweet spot is working with clients who describe themselves as “awkward.” I believe that if you look awkward in photos – that is the photographer’s fault- NOT yours! That takes a lot of the pressure off; we can relax, and I can show them how FUN a photo session can be! If you’re in front of my camera, we are celebrating something, so let’s have a great time!!
What makes you happy?
My family, my business, traveling, cold Diet Cokes, belly laughing with my bestie, a good scary movie, Disneyland, feeling like I nailed a photo session… these are a few of my favorite things (in singsongy voice lol).
