Check Out Matthew Cavanagh’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Cavanagh.

Matthew, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am originally from Big Bear Lake, CA. I graduated from Big Bear High School in 2003 and eventually landed in San Diego in 2006 to attend the Art Institute. While in school I interned for Colosseum Fine Art Gallery in La Jolla and worked my way up to become the assistant publishing director. I learned a ton working closely with established international artists, but always had the desire to pursue my own artistic endeavors. This led me to create Arsic Project, a group of artists that would hold art shows and live painting and music events throughout the San Diego area from 2008-2013. After years of putting on live art shows and being involved in countless art festivals, I decided to put all of my focus on creating public art, specifically mural painting. It was then that I started California Artworks and began pursuing work as a full-time muralist. It took some time to build a portfolio and I soon realized that in order to qualify for larger projects I was going to need a contractor’s license. I quickly obtained my California painting contractors license and went to work calling, emailing and visiting anyone I thought might give me an opportunity to paint a wall. I discovered that there is a lot more that goes into painting murals besides just the design and painting aspects. There was a whole business, and technical side of the trade that I needed to learn as well. Each project would present its own set of challenges and I had to start considering things such as the type of surface, texture and even local weather and sun exposure. Since then, I have completed dozens of murals and am confident working with all types of surfaces and environments.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
There are always bumps along the road, but overall I’ve been lucky to have my business grow organically. I started out emailing local schools and businesses with a newsletter, and visiting local businesses with blank walls. I sent hundreds of emails and only received one email in return and that was from Crown Point Junior Music Academy. I lived around the corner from this school and would always dream of painting the large street facing walls at the front of the school, so I was extremely excited that they were the ones who followed up. Plus, those walls I dreamed of painting were the exact ones they wanted a mural on. I was willing to do it for free because it was on a high traffic street and essentially worked as an advertisement for my services. They were able to get the materials and a lift donated and from then on most of my work has come from word of mouth and referrals. I will always be grateful for them taking a chance on me and I feel fortunate everyday to have a career I love and I’m truly passionate about.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am focused mostly on commercial murals because that’s what I love but also how I make a living, but I always try to carve out some time for my personal fine art projects as well. I am just grateful for you guys being interested in my work and my story, hopefully it helps an aspiring artist put themselves out there and pursue their passion.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Don’t be afraid to put your name out there and have confidence in yourself and your work. Attend art shows and art festivals that allow you to show your work in person. I received a ton of great advice from fellow artists I met on the festival circuit. It’s hard work but also a lot of fun. Social media can be a helpful tool but it isn’t everything, overall people want to experience your art in person and meet the individual behind the work.

Pricing:

  • Mural pricing is calculated by the square foot and varies depending on the amount of detail and color in the design. Typically starting around $25/square foot. This price includes design, materials and labor. Additional costs may include travel and accommodations or equipment rentals such as lifts for high up areas.
