Today we’d like to introduce you to Maxwell Scheller
Hi Maxwell, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2014, I started taking my Nintendo Game Boy Camera to events related to costumes and video games. I would offer portraits that would be printed with a Game Boy Printer. People get shocked with glee from seeing such a thing. In 2018, some people with the Adult Swim Festival asked if I was on Instagram and I ended up getting on that. I go by “That Guy With A Game Boy Camera”. I discovered that there were more people on Social Media embracing the Game Boy Camera. I kept posting photos, which led to an interview with the LA Times: https://www.latimes.com/entertainment/herocomplex/la-et-hc-nintendo-game-boy-anniversary-20190421-story.html
Besides being the Game Boy Camera, I am a fan of the Fallout games, especially Fallout: New Vegas. I ended up making a Documentary about it’s real location with a narrative of the snow globes found in the game: https://youtu.be/ABuu8ryZpV8
Then I felt there was room for improvement, so I made a 2nd Documentary: https://youtu.be/JTpO7jnkiSE
I have also left Bobbleheads of Fallout’s mascot in other cities as a tribute to the other Fallout games where players can look for Bobbleheads in the game.
I would also animate stories my friend would tell with the Game Boy Camera as the Animation Tool: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgovEgyPIkM&list=PLyyq6cnaYLKlVLTX7ZS1q5O5d27ZNAKTX
Then over time, I drew out more stories with the Game Boy Camera and turned it into a “Zine”, which I hand out when I go to places.
I also noticed that Zine Fest’s are a thing, and I figured I could do one in Chula Vista, CA. Now I’m organizing South Bay Zine Fest and seeing how far I get.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
For Zine Fest, trying to get the word out. Using Social Media and putting up fliers. I’ll do what I can to get people to show up. I won’t know the result until it happens.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am That Guy With A Game Boy Camera. I take my act seriously and even make it entertaining. I can be hard on myself if I feel things don’t go my way. It really makes people smile. There’s a handful Game Boy Camera photographers out there and I’m taking it into the field more at certain events.
I’ve seen some “Zines” about Game Boy Camera Art before. Mine is a mix of personal stories and whatever I feel like making. My Zine is meant to have a higher quality.
I have volunteered at Conventions before and maybe it’s time I host an event with South Bay Zine Fest. It could be something I can manage.
What matters most to you?
Staying positive and wanting to do good. Being the other way is not good a feeling.

All photos taken by me. One of my comics was published in The Perfect Healthy. I did take a “selfie” during a panel I hosted at Comic-Con. That photo with the Game Boy’s was on display at an exhibit at the Imperial Beach Library.
