Today we’d like to introduce you to Miguel Sy Qui
Hi Miguel, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
“My passion for martial arts started in the Philippines. After moving to the US, I trained at Pacific Martial Arts in Fresno while working as a chef. The long commute and demanding work schedule made training challenging, but I was determined to succeed. I earned my blue belt through perseverance and hard work. Financial difficulties forced me to move to San Diego, but I never gave up on my dream. I joined The Stronghold and then Atos Jiu-Jitsu under Professor Andre Galvao, earning my purple belt in 2011. I made the difficult decision to leave the restaurant industry and focus entirely on training. This dedication, combined with Professor Galvao’s guidance, led me to earn my brown and then black belt in 2019. My journey has been about overcoming obstacles and pursuing my passion with unwavering commitment.”
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey hasn’t been easy. Immigrating to a new country and building a life here presented significant challenges, from making friends to simply making ends meet. But I wouldn’t trade that experience for anything. It forged a ‘never quit’ attitude and mental toughness that has been invaluable. It also gave me a grounding sense of self and a place where I could escape and adapt to a new culture. This resilience has been crucial in building my business. SyQ Jiu Jitsu began as a simple idea in my garage during the pandemic. I had my doubts initially, but a pivotal experience in 2021, subleasing a small space in a gym, solidified my commitment. It was a ‘now or never’ moment, and I took the leap to establish my own dedicated space.”
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
