Today we’d like to introduce you to Mike One.
Hi Mike, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
As a young child, I was always drawn to music emotionally and spiritually. Given the fact my pops was a DJ, I had natural exposure to many genres and styles. I’ve always been fascinated by sound and production so when I was introduced to music production software, I submerged myself entirely. I expanded my production skill and style over the years as I jumped from one software program to the next. I started in FL studio, then Reason, then Pro Tools, eventually finding myself transitioning solely to the hardware world with the MPC2500. I realized early on with the MPC that this was the best reflection of my style of production and I was determined to master the language.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Growing pains were a regular thing. I often drove myself crazy trying to find my “sound” with the finishing mixing styles on my beats. Did I want a more digital touch or was I going for a more analog sound. I found myself doing everything start to finish in the MPC and keeping it as close to orgin as possible by limiting the digital conversion.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I like to consider myself an artist of sound. I’m known to dig deep for my samples and flip them in creative ways with my signature style and sound. I also play my beats that I created live. I’ve performed at many venues and events locally and I’m always looking to improve my performance. I think that’s what sets me apart the most, there’s something about being able to capture the energy live and share that with an audience.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I’ve found that opportunities are presented through consistency and hard work/determination. I do my best to involve myself in the local hip-hop music scene and making sure to meet and connect with similar minds and talent. Through consistently showing up and staying sharp with my skill sets, opportunity found its way to me. Submerging in that scene not only helped inspire to be better but helped me stay creative.
