Hi Myles, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I got my start in Philadelphia, where I fell in love with clean, intentional design, especially typography and layout. That foundation shaped how I approach everything I do today. Now based in San Diego with over 18 years of experience, I work with mid-sized businesses and emerging brands to create visuals that are clear, thoughtful, and built to last.
Through my studio, Backspace Designs, I focus on packaging, branding, and visual systems that help brands communicate their story with clarity and style. Whether it’s a new snack brand or a company in need of a full refresh, I’m all about design that’s functional, strategic, and beautifully executed.
To me, good design isn’t just about how it looks, it’s about how it works, how it makes people feel, and how well it supports the bigger goals behind a brand.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t always been smooth. Like a lot of creatives, I’ve had to wear a lot of hats, especially early on. I’ve navigated freelance droughts, tight timelines, and the constant challenge of balancing client expectations with strong design principles. Moving from Philly to California also meant rebuilding my network from the ground up, which took time and persistence.
Honestly, those challenges helped me sharpen not just my design skills, but my ability to communicate, manage projects, and build long-term partnerships. Every rough patch pushed me to get clearer on the kind of work I want to do and the kind of clients I want to work with. It’s all part of the process.
