Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Restrepo-Wilson.
Hi Nancy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
For nearly two years now, I’ve been part of the Client Services Division at Father Joe’s Villages, and I’m excited to celebrate my upcoming second anniversary on June 7th. In my current position, I focus on providing social services and essential resources to our clients, helping them prepare for success and improve their circumstances.
I grew up with a humanitarian mother, and I watched her being kind to those who were not fully accepted in the neighborhood. I probably had inherited a helpful trait, but I chose to be part of solutions and helping people improve their situations. I started my career path as a psychotherapist in New York City, where I worked with individuals of all ages who had endured significant trauma. Witnessing their resilience and desire for personal transformation reaffirmed my passion for making a positive impact in people’s lives. As a community-oriented practitioner, I pursued other trajectories in my field, such as community organizing and administrator. Relocating to California and working with those experiencing homelessness has allowed me to extend that impact on a larger scale.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Every day, we face the systemic issues contributing to homelessness, which necessitates not only supporting individuals and families directly but also advocating for systemic, societal changes. Addressing the root causes of homelessness requires collaboration with policymakers, politicians, advocates, and community organizations to implement sustainable solutions. Additionally, the complex circumstances faced by each individual present their own set of challenges, such as mental health crisis, substance abuse, and lack of stable housing and employment. Overcoming these challenges requires loving and listening to all people and their challenges, hopes, and dreams, providing comprehensive support and coordination across different service providers and agencies. Despite these obstacles, I remain committed to appreciating people as they are, supporting staff and programs for greater client success, helping find meaningful approaches, advocating for necessary resources and policy changes, towards making a lasting impact in the lives of those we serve.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
The social services department at Father Joe’s Villages specializes in providing crucial support and resources to individuals and families facing homelessness. I oversee various programs, including the Therapeutic Child Care Center, where we provide wraparound services, childcare, psychotherapy, parenting classes, connections to schools, learning opportunities, special events, and mentorship to children aged 0 to 17. We also have an Employment and Education program that helps clients with employment resources and opportunities, from building resumes, obtaining vocational training, and securing employment. In addition, I oversee a multi-level Case Management program supporting clients with benefits, employment, and housing.
With a background in psychotherapy and extensive experience serving diverse populations in various non-profit, community, school-based, and tribal organizations, I bring a deep understanding of the challenges faced by individuals experiencing homelessness. I constantly think about the traumatic circumstances that may have brought people to where they are. Similarly, I believe in personal transformation and post-traumatic growth. By fostering a compassionate and supportive environment, both for staff and clients, I enjoy helping to bring up the power within individuals and families to overcome adversity, regain stability, and achieve self-sufficiency.
I take great pride in cultivating a compassionate and empowering environment where individuals feel heard, valued, and supported. Witnessing their growth, resilience, and ability to overcome challenges has been incredibly rewarding. Additionally, the collaborative efforts within the social services department and the wider Father Joe’s Villages community make a significant impact. Working alongside dedicated colleagues who share a passion for serving our neighbors in need has been an incredible experience. Together, we strive to create positive change and make a lasting difference in the lives of those facing homelessness.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Networking and finding a mentor are invaluable for personal and professional growth. Actively engage with professional organizations, attend industry events, and participate in relevant communities to connect with like-minded individuals. Consider reaching out for informational interviews or networking events to professionals in your desired field, expressing your genuine interest, and seeking their guidance. Many professionals are open to sharing experiences and offering mentorship.
In my role, I oversee a program at Father Joe’s Villages specifically designed to support students at SDSU interested in social services careers. We connect them with professionals in the field, facilitate mentorship opportunities, and provide guidance for career development. I encourage students to explore similar programs offered by their educational institutions as they can help build a strong network.
