Today we’d like to introduce you to Naomi Ocampo.
Hi Naomi, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My earliest vivid memory takes me back to the makeup section of Macy’s. I can still recall my mom browsing through lipsticks while a store employee offered to let me try some makeup. Sitting in that highchair, gazing at my reflection in the mirror, I felt a sense of beauty wash over me. The act of transformation thrilled me. Similarly, I view modeling as a means of transforming. Behind the lens, I can embody different personas. Whether I’m showcasing a product, flashing a smile, striding confidently, or capturing attention in an advertisement, there’s an inherent joy that comes with the process.
My admiration for iconic models like Twiggy from the ’60s and Naomi Campbell from the ’90s deepened my intrigue. Initially, I did photoshoots with friends for fun. It wasn’t until I relocated to San Diego that I truly embraced modeling. The warm welcome of the photography community played a pivotal role in my journey. Even when I was inexperienced, their support empowered me to shoot and secure gigs. My move to SD marked the start of my journey into uncharted territories: photography studios and commercial sets.
When I signed with an agency in LA, it felt like a big step forward, a sign of recognition of my potential. But in reality, it was just the beginning of my journey. Modeling goes beyond work for me – it’s also something I genuinely love. After a day’s work, I often set up creative photoshoots for the joy of creating. This passion fuels my drive to keep exploring and evolving.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey has had its highs and lows. While I love my work, every profession has certain expectations, and facing rejection is a consistent part of modeling. I’ve confronted personal struggles centered around my identity and body image. I struggle with insecurities of being too short, not meeting the ideal measurements, or feeling out of place. It’s all part of the process. I’ve learned to embrace rejection and not let it define my worth. Even today, nurturing my self-confidence remains a work in progress. I’m committed to seeking out environments that uplift and inspire me.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in commercial, music video, and print modeling. I am most proud of my creative photoshoots with photographers from LA and SD. I love bringing my style to the table while collaborating closely with the photographer’s vision. It’s more than just striking poses; modeling is like acting – you become a character. It’s a creative partnership and a form of art that I cherish.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
I graduated with a B.S. in Computer Science. I like to code and play video games in my free time.
