Check Out Nataliia Hordiiuk’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nataliia Hordiiuk.

Hi Nataliia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
The Beginning: Noticing the Unseen. My journey as a photographer began long before I realized it would become my career. Growing up in Ukraine, I had a natural fascination with details that others often overlooked. Even as a young girl, I would capture the world on a phone with a very basic camera, driven simply by the joy of observation. I was deeply inspired by nature—the morning mist, dew drops on the grass, and the ever-changing colors of the sky. To me, nature is a priceless gift we receive upon entering this world, and I have always felt a calling to share its intricate beauty with others.

The Evolution: From Hobby to Profession Later on, I discovered the art of “flat lay” photography. I felt so inspired by creators I followed online that I began practicing relentlessly. Even today, I live by the proverb, “Live and learn” (вік живи — вік учись). In this industry, there is no finish line; there is always a new technique to master or a fresh perspective to find.

The transition to professional work happened almost by accident. I used to photograph my friends and my sister for fun. One day, she looked at my work and asked, “Why don’t you start doing this professionally? You’re actually really good at this.” That was the push I needed. Like many, I struggled with self-doubt and wasn’t sure if I should take my hobby seriously. If you are doubting yourself right now, know that it’s normal. My advice is to listen to your heart. If your eyes light up when you do something—trust that feeling. That is your path.

Eventually, I built a diverse portfolio, shooting everything from family portraits and Love Stories to food photography for local restaurants and commercial work for brands. My client base grew naturally through word-of-mouth and “sarafan radio.”

The Turning Point: Starting Over from Zero In 2022, when I moved to the United States, everything changed. Moving to a new country is a massive challenge; it’s essentially hitting the reset button on your entire life. To say it was difficult is an understatement—it was hard in every sense of the word. To anyone going through a similar experience of displacement or starting over: I am with you!

Despite the obstacles, I managed to rebuild. I immersed myself in the American photography industry, and today, in addition to my freelance work, I am proud to be a Lead Photographer for an American company.

My Vision Today Currently, I focus on portrait, lifestyle, and product photography, blending clean aesthetics with emotional depth. My goal is not just to create beautiful images, but to craft visuals that connect people, tell stories, and leave a lasting impression. I believe that photography is a universal language that speaks when words are not enough.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like any creative journey, it’s been a mix of mountain peaks and deep valleys.

The Internal Struggle In the beginning, my biggest obstacle was self-doubt. For a long time, I viewed my photography only as a hobby, convinced that ‘professional’ was a title meant for someone else. Breaking through that imposter syndrome and finding the confidence to charge for my work was a significant mental hurdle. I had to learn that being an artist also means being a business owner, which was a steep learning curve.

The Great Reset The most profound challenge, however, was moving to the U.S. in 2022. Overnight, I went from having a established reputation and a loyal client base in Ukraine to being a complete unknown in a brand-new market.

Starting from zero in a new country isn’t just about finding new clients; it’s about:

– Rebuilding a network from scratch without the help of ‘word-of-mouth’ I had back home.
– Adapting to a different visual culture and understanding the nuances of the American photography market.
– The emotional weight of leaving my home and trying to stay creative while navigating the stress of relocation.

The Lesson There were many days when I wondered if I could ever reach my previous level again. But these struggles taught me that my skills are portable. They forced me to be more proactive, to study the industry more deeply, and to be resilient. Today, I look at those challenges as the ‘fire’ that refined my vision. They made me not just a better photographer, but a stronger person. To anyone facing a ‘reset’ in their life: the road is bumpy, but the view from the other side is worth the climb.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a professional photographer specializing in portrait, lifestyle, and product photography. My work is a blend of clean, sophisticated aesthetics and deep emotional storytelling. Whether I am capturing the raw intimacy of a family session or the curated elegance of a brand’s product, my focus remains the same: finding the extraordinary in the ordinary.

What I am known for is my meticulous attention to detail—a trait that stayed with me from my early days of photographing morning dew in Ukraine—and my ability to work with natural light to create atmospheric, ‘soulful’ imagery. Clients often say that my photos don’t just look like a moment; they feel like a moment.

What I am most proud of is my resilience and the ability to rebuild my creative career from the ground up in the United States. Transitioning from an established professional in my home country to a Lead Photographer in an American company within a short period is a testament to my dedication and the universal language of my visual style.

What sets me apart is my ‘immigrant’s eye’—a perspective that never takes beauty for granted. Because I have experienced a total reset in my life, I approach every shoot with a profound sense of gratitude and a heightened sensitivity to the fleeting nature of time. I don’t just deliver high-quality files; I provide a vision that connects, tells a story, and leaves a lasting impression. I combine the technical precision required for commercial work with the heart and spontaneity of lifestyle photography.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I believe that luck is often where preparation meets opportunity, but my journey has certainly been shaped by both ‘good’ and ‘bad’ luck in profound ways.

Turning ‘Bad Luck’ into Strength The most obvious instance of what many would call ‘bad luck’ was the beginning of the full-scale war in Ukraine in 2022, which forced me to leave my home. It felt like everything I had built—my reputation, my client base, my sense of security—was lost overnight. However, looking back, this ‘bad luck’ became a powerful catalyst. It forced me to test my resilience and proved that my talent isn’t tied to a specific location, but is something I carry within me. It pushed me to enter the U.S. market with a level of urgency and hunger that I might never have had otherwise.

The ‘Good Luck’ of Human Connection On the flip side, I consider myself very lucky when it comes to the people I’ve met. From my sister’s early encouragement that pushed me to go professional, to the first few clients in the U.S. who took a chance on a newcomer, these connections felt like serendipity. But I also believe that you ‘invite’ good luck by being consistent, showing up with a positive attitude, and staying true to your vision.

Ultimately, luck played the role of a teacher. The ‘bad’ luck taught me that I am stronger than I thought, and the ‘good’ luck taught me the value of community and gratitude. Today, I don’t wait for luck; I focus on doing the work and staying open to the doors that open along the way.
