Today we’d like to introduce you to Phoenix Miller
Hi Phoenix, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hey! I’m Phoenix. I’m originally from Denver, Colorado, but moved to San Diego in 2022 to pursue a journalism degree at San Diego State University. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been deeply passionate about photography. I got my first camera when I was 8 or 9, a little toy camera that I took with me everywhere. Although I spent a lot of time taking pictures of anything and everything, I didn’t start taking photography seriously until high school. I took my first photo class there, where I created a portfolio project centered on the impacts of addiction; a topic that means a lot to me as a kid who comes from a family riddled with addiction issues. It was while putting together this project that I realized I wanted to focus my life and my career on photojournalism.
Since being in college at SDSU, I’ve thrown myself into as many photo opportunities as I could find. I began working for The Look–SDSU’s fashion, art, and culture magazine–directing and shooting creative portraits. I also joined The Daily Aztec as a staff photographer and writer, taking pictures of everything from sports, to news and features stories, and to more portraits. Although I love all types of photography, I think my favorite photo experiences so far have been photographing concerts. The very first concert I did was Arlo Parks at The Observatory back in February of 2024, and I immediately fell in love with concert photography. I photographed 22 more artists and bands the rest of that year, with some of my favorites being Blink-182, Kaytranada, and Dayglow. While I’m just getting started in the photography world, I hope to be able to turn this passion of mine into a full time career. I’m so excited for all that’s to come!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
While trying to find my way in the photography world has been full of great experiences and a whole lot of learning, it has also been challenging. As a first-generation college student that comes from a low-income background, I’m supporting myself entirely. This means working two jobs on top of attending school full-time, which doesn’t leave a whole lot of time or energy to focus on photography. I’m lucky to be surrounded by wonderful mentors and friends who keep me motivated to continue pursuing this dream of mine.
I also struggle with imposter syndrome, something that I think a number of other creative people also struggle with from time to time. San Diego is home to a surplus of incredible photographers, and while it’s amazing to be surrounded and inspired by such talented people, it’s definitely been intimidating trying to find my own way in this world. But, while the competition can be intense at times, I know that I’ve come a long way in my skills and mindset, and I trust that I will continue to improve with practice and a genuine love for what I do.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a photographer primarily, but I also work in writing, video, design, and social media content creation. While I specialize in concert and portrait photography, I also photograph sports, events, news, food and beverages, and products. No matter what it is I’m documenting, my goal is always to capture the essence of an event or subject, and to make my clients happy! I’m very much a people person, so being able to connect with others and bring their vision to life is one of my favorite parts of the job.
I’m most proud of my ability to adapt across different forms of photography, and that I always strive to bring authenticity and creativity to each story. I believe that what sets me apart is my creative vision and ability to translate ideas into compelling visuals and stories under tight deadlines. I have a strong eye for composition, color, and emotion, which allows me to find unique angles that make my work stand out.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
Photography is definitely evolving, and over the next 5-10 years, I see it becoming even more integrated with multimedia storytelling. I think that it will become more commonplace for photographers to incorporate video, motion graphics, and interactive elements to create more immersive content.
I think that artificial intelligence softwares are also going to change the industry, making editing and workflow more efficient and giving photographers new tools to work with. But at the end of the day, a strong creative eye and storytelling skills will always set great photographers apart. AI-generated photos will never be able to replicate human authenticity, so I don’t think that the value of a truly good photograph will ever be lost.
With social media and digital platforms shaping how people consume photography, adaptability is key. I see myself growing by combining traditional photography with new digital storytelling techniques while always focusing on capturing real, impactful moments.
