Check Out Rys The Neighbor’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rys The Neighbor.

Hi Rys, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m Rys The Neighbor from Oceanside Ca. I grew up in the deep valley section of the city also known as the back gate. As a child, I attended St. John Baptist church where I found my love for music. First by playing the drums at age 3 then it progressively became my natural source of creative expression. Music always came easy to me. I started singing in the youth choir around the age of 9 and it’s been an endless journey since then. The love for the art is what keeps me pushing.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
All great things come with obstacles, otherwise, they’re ordinary. I have encountered countless difficulties in my career. A lot of trial and error, fixing things that aren’t broken, feeling hopeless, thinking that my music isn’t adequate, feeling like I’m wasting my time, wanting to throw it all away… But when I feel like this, I always think of this quote by Nipsey Hussle. He said, “you closer to where you’re trying to get than where you started from, you gotta keep going.” So, I keep going

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a rapper/singer and I make hip-hop music with a jazzy/funky/melodic vibe to it. I also have a clothing brand called Good Neighbor Apparel. What I’m most proud of is my resilience. No matter how many doors are shut in my face and no matter what obstacles come my way, I will prosper because I don’t have any other choice. It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey and the characteristics you hold that allowed you to reach success. It’s the behaviors that produce results. What sets me apart from others is my story. No one else has ever walked my path and no one can ever do what I do the way that I do it. I’m one of one.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
With the music/apparel industry, things are always changing. If you’re on time you’re late. In the next 5-10 years nothing will be the same. Both industries lead what is deemed “trendy” and both music and apparel is unpredictable.
