Check Out Sarah Slaughter’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Slaughter.

Hi Sarah, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Born and raised in San Diego — one of five kids — I grew up with a deep love for this city and everything it has to offer. After graduating from UC San Diego with a degree in Communications, I landed an internship at Channel 10 News with dreams of pursuing broadcast journalism. But one weekend, while wandering through a stunning model home, everything changed. I was instantly captivated — by the architecture, the design, the staging — and I knew right then that Real Estate was where I belonged.

My career began in New Home Sales, where I spent nearly a decade working with several distinguished builders across San Diego County. During that time, I had the privilege of selling and closing hundreds of homes in some of the county’s most sought-after communities. From charming inland neighborhoods to breathtaking coastal retreats, I’ve experienced the full spectrum of what San Diego real estate has to offer — and I’ve loved every moment of it.

I took a brief — okay, seven-year! — hiatus to do one of the most important jobs of all: raising our family in our coastal hometown of Encinitas. Once both children were more independent and settled into school full time, I dove back into real estate, this time transitioning into the resale market. It was then that a good friend and neighbor, who happened to also be a Realtor, reached out with the idea of joining forces as a team. It turned out to be one of the best decisions of my career, and I haven’t looked back since.

We sell all over San Diego County from Oceanside to Alpine and specialize in North County San Diego. Whether we are representing the buyer or seller we thrive on making every transaction an enjoyable and stress-free experience. As part of the Jackson/Arnett team at Compass, we have consistently been recognized as a top-producing team.

All of those experiences have given me a deep understanding of this market, strong negotiating chops, and a real passion for helping people find exactly what they’re looking for. At the end of the day, every home sale is a big deal, and I genuinely love being the person my clients trust to get it done.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
During the pandemic, selling homes became a very interesting experience. There were many rules and regulations in effect to even tour a property. I’d say we had to become very flexible and open to all of the challenges during that timeframe. Open Houses were no longer allowed and showings became a bit of a juggling act! There was so much confusion and anxiety for buyers and sellers during that time that we had to adjust course and get creative! The tough moments taught me the most and my clients are better off for it!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Realtor with Compass helping buyers and sellers achieve their real estate goals in San Diego County. As a San Diego native, this gives me an edge on the competition with my vast knowledge of the different neighborhoods, school districts, lifestyle, hidden gems, and local insight! I like to say that my brand tagline would be: “Being a San Diego native isn’t just a fun fact — it’s my competitive edge.”

Among the many transactions I’m proud of, one stands out above the rest — a stunning 115-acre equestrian estate in Alpine. This property was truly unlike anything I had tackled before. While the home itself was straightforward, the expansive land, equestrian infrastructure, and specialized equipment required me to become a quick study on subjects I had never encountered. And then there was the wildlife — from deer wandering through my tours to rattlesnakes, coyotes, and turkeys making unexpected appearances, every showing was an adventure in itself!
Bringing this property to market took several months of research and preparation, and while it was well outside my comfort zone, the experience was invaluable. It deepened my expertise in a way no other transaction had. That knowledge is now coming full circle, as I currently have another stunning equestrian property on the market in the charming neighborhood of Olivenhain in Encinitas — and this time, I’m ready.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Patience! It takes a while to build your business and every year is different. Get creative while building your brand and stay current on everything real estate related. Finding a great mentor is also key! Having someone to show you the way and be a constant resource for you in this ever-changing market is huge!
