Check Out Shay Sullivan’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shay Sullivan.

Hi Shay, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have been skateboarding since I was 12 years old, so about 22 years. It has been everything to me from the first time I picked up the wooden toy. After riding for a handful of different companies I realized I wanted to leave my own foot print in skating so to speak. So in 2017 I decided to start Sixpack Skateboards. In the 8 years of having it my main focus has always been to hype people on skateboarding, keep it affordable, and to show/remind people that skateboarding is the best thing on earth. I still skateboard everyday even after multiple surgeries it’s still my main focus. I now have the pleasure of introducing it to my son Charlie which has inspired me even more. Shoutout my wife Angela for being my biggest supporter for Sixpack and my skateboarding.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I feel like owning anything in skateboarding is never a “smooth” road but more of a road filled with rocks and pot holes. The biggest struggles in it is 1. There’s not a lot of money in it whatsoever. I believe anyone who owns a company in skateboarding has to have the love for it and passion. 2. Skateboarding seems to have big rises and even bigger falls. The scene is always changing and right now I believe it’s on a downward slope, so if you have a local shop please go show some love! The good thing about riding a skateboard tho is that it teaches you how to always pick yourself up and to keep pushing forward. Which translates super well in trying to run a business. It’s all for the fun tho. So the rough roads are a blast to bomb down.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My “work” is really just to remind people how fun and what a blessing skateboarding is. And in doing so hoping that they’ll support the little companies like myself who are in it to give back to the community and not for a paycheck. But I do high quality decks ranging from popsicle to unique shapes. I also do soft goods such as hoodies, shirts, beanies etc.
For what I’m known for is a good question. You’d have to ask the homies that question. I’d hope I’d be known for being a 100% skateboarder and really having a passion to inspire people to skate.
I’m most proud of always staying true to what I believe skateboarding is and not letting the “trends” or whatever you want to call it, sway the needle.

What were you like growing up?
Well I was your typical wild, go go go, kid. I did what most kids do and played sports such as basketball and football but when I discovered skateboarding I stopped everything else and only could think about riding my skateboard. I’ve always been someone who likes to do his own thing and wasn’t much of a team sport player. I didn’t like being told how to do something or I can’t do this or that. I wanted to do things my way and not be told it can only be done one way. Skateboardings perfect for that. Skateboarding has given me so much from a young age to this very day. Countless memories, seeing new places I would have never seen, and some of the best homies ever! Shoutout to all of them!
