Check Out Tom & Melissa Jurusik’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tom & Melissa Jurusik.

Hi Tom & Melissa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
It all started when I started working at the legendary Hodad’s almost 15 years ago. Working there for a short while, they approached a couple of us about some new merch ideas, due to the fact we were in the surf and skate world. We collaborated on a few ideas. That led to some more successful ideas with the Hodad’s brand. The pandemic hit, lockdown occurred, Hodad’s didn’t need any merch, and my wife and I decided to take a chance on ourselves. Living in and loving OB, it was our obvious first choice to focus on and my wife ended up designing a really cool logo. We feel it represented the funky simplicity that we all know and love about OB.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Business is never a linear path. You can have a business plan to reference to stay the course, but it will always have its ups and downs. Getting the trademark to a logo or getting a following to introduce a brand is always a curious one fraught with obstacles. We face what all businesses face, relevance in a very crowded market. We plan to stay the course and continue to add and innovate. We hope to never be to proud to pivot on to or off of a fail idea.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Melissa works in online marketing and loves the creative side of the industry and I have worked in the restaurant industry for over twenty years. Restaurants always had some form of merchandise representing the company and I was always curious how a company portrayed that via the clothing they attempted to brand. Also, I grew up a skateboarder/snowboarder and was briefly sponsored when I was younger. I use to travel and compete on skateboarding and had an affinity for the different styles represented across the US and globe.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Definitely not bragging when I say I used to be sponsored for yo-yoing. During the late nineties, there was a short resurgence in popularity for yo-yoing. Well, my 10–12-year-old self couldn’t be happier. I did some regional touring at that time as a sponsored yo-yoer. I had a great time, although short-lived, luckily, I had skateboarding to brace my fall from grace.
