Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Hess.
Rachel, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’m Native American born and raised on an American Indian Reservation, I was raised with learning the arts of basket-weaving and moccasin making. I launched my company (First American Baby) September, 2017. My company is Native American/Western Designs in A Contemporary World.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I basket-weave Cradle-Boards, baskets that hold little babies. I gather and cure all my materials for basket-weaving. The babies absolutely love bing wrapped up tightly and rocked to sleep. I also design and manufacture baby apparel and baby moccasins. My Native American/Western upbringing shines through all my designs. I create all my patterns sew all my designs. People can look at my designs and know instantly, that I’m a country gal with big city dreams. You should know that all the products I use for my designs, are organic, and at First American Baby, it’s all about the babies and their comfort! After all, they are the precious future!
Have things improved for artists? What should cities do to empower artists?
I believe in my destiny, of course at times it’s a struggle, but I believe ALL things are possible! San Diego has one of the best Art Market scenes in Cali, so I’m stoked!
