Check out Renee Martinez’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Renee Martinez.

Renee, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’ve always loved photography. I never thought I could pursue it because I couldn’t afford a DSLR camera to take professional photographs. I had been talking to a co-worker of mine about life and if we could do anything what would it be? Mine was photography. While talking, a favorite customer of mine overheard our conversation and offered to give me, no strings attached, his Canon Rebel. I, of course, never held my breath that he would actually GIVE me this camera but the next day he brought it in, lens and all, and even sat down with me a few times to give me some tips and lessons. I truly believe this is what I am meant to do. My life’s calling. That camera and conversation paved the way for my business, better equipment and my heart’s desire for photography.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
My passion is family and portrait photography. I myself have two children, and in the midst of the everyday chaos of parenthood and life, we forget to really capture the moments of NOW. I am incredibly inspired by families and children and their own personal stories. I try to relate to each family I photograph and really bring to light what their dynamic is, real moments and the love that they share. I thrive off of candid moments between children and their parents, even if the parents don’t see it as ideal. It’s real, it’s right now, and it’s your truth. I make the family interact with one another, get them comfortable, and I slowly become part of the scene around them so that they can begin to show their true selves.

Have things improved for artists? What should cities do to empower artists?
I think photography is a saturated market. I also believe most people think its a dying art. It’s so sad because people think iPhone photos are good enough but what they are missing is being present at the moment, the art of photography and supporting local business and people in their communities. I would love to see more cities establish a way for artists of similar interests to get together and become more creative.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
