Today we’d like to introduce you to Rio Baxter.
Rio, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I grew up homeschooled, using my copious amounts of time with creative ventures. It just so happens that painting and writing songs seemed to be the one that stuck. I would spend hours painting all of my toys as a kid. I feel like that kind of discipline has carried over into what I can do today.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I make pieces that revolve around myself: my experiences as a queer person, as a blasphemous Christian, as someone who was taught to be a lady and then left it, and as someone who is trying to figure it all out.
Do current events, local or global, affect your work and what you are focused on?
Since we are globalized at this point, The role of an artist is more important than ever. Being able to share your voice with people across the world is an incredible privilege at the price of being responsible with what you say. Local issues affect my art the most. For example, the pastor at the church I went to for years just had a terrible tragedy that greatly impacted the community. That is something that will undoubtedly come out in my work.
