Check out Shane Shipley’s Artwork

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shane Shipley.

Shane, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I was born in Missouri back in 1984, that’s where my dad and his whole side of my family lives. When my parents split mom and I headed out west to Southern California where my Mom is from to be closer to her family. I would spend my school years out here in San Diego and my summers out in the sticks with my dad and his side of the family in a little town called Brumley Missouri just outside of Lake of the Ozarks. We all know San Diego is beautiful but Missouri really is such a beautiful place and I got the best of both worlds having my time in the Ocean, woods, lakes and rivers. Both sides of my family were all fans of music, on my father’s side it was a lot of blues, classic country, outlaw country like Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Paycheck, Vern Gosdin and Vince Gill. My mom out here in California listened to a lot of different things like Linda Ronstadt, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Guns n’ Roses along with Motown artists like Al Green and folks like that. She had signed me up for music lessons when I was a child but couldn’t for the life of me sit still long enough to get the ball rolling. I was an adventurous child and just wanted to be out riding my BMX bike and exploring around in all of the nearby canyons. Fast forward to me being 15 years old and a friend of mine by the name of Jon Elliott had shown me a few chords on the guitar and I just kind of left it at that for a while not really pushing myself to learn more than that. I got into my late 20’s and was making less frequent trips out to Missouri so I was really listening to a lot of older country music that reminded me of being back with my family in Brumley. Eventually I started teaching myself full songs to cover and would head out on Sunday nights to the Saddle Bar in Solana Beach to try them out. The first time I finally got the nerves to get up and play a few songs instead of getting scared and just driving home was the most freeing experience of my life. I couldn’t stop smiling for days. My best friend Jake Loban who has carved out a nice path for himself out in Nashville has a big part in getting the ball rolling for me. He would push me to play and play and play, eventually he just texted me and asked me what I was doing on a random date. I responded “nothing, why?” He then replied “good! It’s the date of your first gig! And you are opening for me!” I was a terrified and excited mess anticipating this upcoming event but I got through it and was hooked. I started doing these weekly meet ups with Bill and Gabe Messer, A father and son in Oceanside and we kind of created our own musician workshop we would hold every weekend. They took me under their wings and showed me the ropes about singing, songwriting and just how to play along with other musicians where I ended up meeting the Drummer and Bass players Luke and CJ for The Shane Shipley Band. I started hosting an open mic that was originally hosted by Jake Loban called Revival Monday the 1st & 3rd Monday of every month at The Kraken bar in Cardiff where it is strictly country, blues, folk and Americana where people could show up to play cover songs of those genres or showcase themselves as singer songwriters which was amazing because it became a platform for people to perform for other musicians and players would show up to play lead guitar, pedal steel, fiddle, banjo, keys, drums and other instruments for each other. I host another music night the 2nd & 4th Wednesday of every month at Booze Brother Brewery in Vista. They have both become pretty amazing networking platforms for local musicians and I am proud to be a part/hosting of something that feels like an amazing scene of extremely talented people where we all continue to inspire and push each other to be better musicians. Within the last five years my life has gone from me not being a musician and always knowing that my soul had been longing for me to be musically creative, to me just diving into music head first, giving it my all, hosting music nights and just doing what my soul had been calling for.

We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I play in a Country-Rock n’ Roll band (The Shane Shipley Band) and also host Revival Mondays at The Kraken along with The Booze Brothers Back Porch Music Showcase. Both are country, blues, folk, bluegrass & Americana singer/songwriter themed open mic nights.

I am the singer/rhythm guitar player/songwriter/booker/manager for the band and Host for the events listed above.

I play and want to hear songs that remind me of my family and childhood summers back in Missouri. All the songs I write and cover are time capsules for me, taking me back to my roots and it’s also a way for me/us to pay our respects and honor a style of music we value from the bottom of our hearts.

I’ll just say that I write music for people that work hard, have lived, lost, loved, given, taken, with satisfied or broken hearts and have the scars to show. We are out here for a good time and want our fans to come have a few drinks and listen to our spin on classic music we love.

What do you think it takes to be successful as an artist?
I don’t define success by a financial standpoint. You have to stop and ask yourself if you are doing something that you love and feeds you in a positive way. If you have a 9-5 that is not your dream job just to get by and pay the bills….. Make sure you are giving yourself some time to do what you need to do to be passionate and satisfied in your heart.

Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
We have some live performances on YouTube under The Shane Shipley Band and I’m active on my social media platforms such as Instagram and Facebook and make updated post about upcoming shows and events.

The Shane Shipley Band is just finishing up recording an album produced by Dillon Casey. And we have a show coming up this Friday September 21st at the Pour House in Oceanside 9:30pm.

The best way to support me, the band and the music nights I host, is to just come out to shows and be present. support your live local music scene whether it’s ours or anybody’s for that matter.
