Check Out Stephanie Wilson’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Wilson.

Stephanie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
When I was eight years old, I received a Fisher-Price camera for Christmas. From that moment on I was obsessed with photographs and taking them. I was the main photographer for my school’s newspaper and yearbook. Over the years, life took me in many different directions and along the way, I lost my passion for art. Several years ago, shortly after moving to California, I found myself lost in the grips of addiction. It was also during this time that I picked up a camera again.

Today, I am almost a year, clean and sober. I can also recognize that throughout the darkest days and nights of my struggle with addiction, my passion for photography is one of, if not the only thing, that kept me from totally losing my grip on reality. When I leave my house, I always have my gear on me. Photography is my therapy. I see a sunset or a landscape or whatever and it moves me in one way or another. I feel through my photography. I have come to a point in my life that I feel as though I have something to give back to the world. My photography is that outlet for me.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have been many obstacles that I have had to face throughout my life. Some blessings and some not so much. My journey in recovery has taught me to take those challenges and learn from them and ultimately be grateful for them.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m not entirely sure how to categorize the type of photography that I specialize in. I photograph life. I photograph emotions. I photograph from the heart. I believe that is what sets me apart. You feel something when you look at my photographs. It doesn’t necessarily have to be what I felt when I captured the image.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
San Diego is so full of diversity and opportunity. Not to mention Southern California is beautiful and the weather is the best in the country. Before moving here, I had not been exposed to such a large homeless population. Although there are many resources in this county for the homeless community, I believe there can be more done about it. I speak from experience because for several years, I was living out of my car. But not everyone takes the same opportunities that I was blessed to be given.
