chris cott’s Stories, Lessons & Insights

We recently had the chance to connect with chris cott and have shared our conversation below.

Hi chris, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
I recently bought a 1959 Triumph TR3. My dad drove them when I was a kid growing up here in San Diego. I have been wanting one for years and finally found one worthy of his memory. The weather here is almost always perfect for cruising the coast with my 2 dogs.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I have been lucky enough to have made a living doing what I love: art. After airbrushing here at my shop on the boardwalk for 24 years, I was offered work decorating a restaurant here in Pacific Beach. got to pick the colors, lighting, decor AND paint the signs and murals. That grew into a dozen more, here, in Los Angelos and on Maui & Oahu. Not only was it great coming in and watching the guests checking out my work, but they fed me, and the food was great

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
My art teachers in school really encouraged me. I have been lucky enough to have been given opportunities throughout life to do what I love.
I’ve tried to go back and thank each and every one, and I really miss the ones that are gone.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
After being offered an airbrush shop on Antigua that never materialized, I almost turned around and came back to San Diego. I’m glad I stuck it out, I met great people and made the palapa on the beach work out.
I think the possibility of having to admit that I failed drove me to stay and make it work out.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I am passionate about the aesthetics of our city, actually, our planet. I try to do something to make it better every day; whether it’s picking up litter or removing graffiti. It’s appalling how people treat the very places they live. I’ve seen cities go downhill to the point of appearing they gave up. Feeling blessed to live in such a wonderful city in this great country drives me to continue. Doing something to make the world better doesn’t have to take a long time and you will feel better even if no one else thanks you.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What will you regret not doing?
I should have had dogs sooner! Not only do they calm me and keep me company, but I am also lucky enough to have clients that let me bring them to work. The restaurants I decorate were dog friendly or are now! I get to meet many fascinating people I wouldn’t have otherwise as well.
