Community Highlights: Meet Adrian Suarez of AICON SOLAR

Today we’d like to introduce you to Adrian Suarez

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m an electrical engineer originally from Venezuela with 15 years of experience in the solar industry, and I also hold an MBA. My interest in renewable energy started during college when I read an article about a technology that converts sunlight into electricity. I found it fascinating and began researching it further. After graduating, I worked for AmBev, a multinational beverage company, as a Regional Trade Marketing Manager, but my passion for solar led me to transition into the industry.
In 2009, while completing my MBA at Bocconi University in Milan, I learned about a French group that wanted to start a solar business in Venezuela. They were seeking an electrical engineer with business development skills, a unique profile at the time. Although I had no prior experience in solar, I was selected for the role and was sent to Colorado to specialize in Photovoltaic Systems.
I began my solar career in Venezuela in 2010, where I worked on several landmark projects, including the country’s first grid-tied system, the first solar-powered billboard, and the first solar systems in Los Roques. I also worked on projects in the Amazon rainforest, providing power to the Warao indigenous community for the first time. It was an incredibly fulfilling experience, and I became a passionate advocate for solar energy, speaking on major radio and TV shows, as well as at events nationally and internationally.
However, by 2015, hyperinflation caused the Venezuelan economy to crash, prompting me to seek opportunities abroad. I started a solar company in Panama, but the market was too nascent for success. That same year, I attended the largest solar event in the U.S. in Anaheim, where I visited a close friend in San Diego. I immediately fell in love with the city—it had the perfect combination of great weather, surf, good vibes, and abundant sunlight. San Diego, at the time, was a hub for solar energy, and I knew it was the right place to continue my solar journey.
To start my own company in California, I needed a contractor’s license, which required four years of local experience. While I had extensive experience in Latin America, I lacked the California-specific experience. I connected with a local solar company owner who needed a seasoned electrical engineer, which allowed me to gain the required experience. After passing both the law and trade exams, I earned my contractor’s license.
Even after obtaining my license, it was challenging to start from scratch. I worked long hours—up to 16 a day—balancing a full-time job with growing my business. I managed 91 commercial jobs while running my own company on the side. Once my business became more profitable than my job, I decided to fully commit to growing it. Since then, I’ve focused on scaling my business and overcoming the daily challenges of being an entrepreneur. Although I don’t work 16-hour days anymore, I continue to dedicate myself to growing and learning in this dynamic industry.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. While I’ve had many fulfilling experiences, I’ve also faced a fair share of challenges. One of the biggest hurdles was starting in a field—solar energy—that was still in its infancy in Venezuela when I first entered it. There were limited resources, and solar education didn’t exist locally at the time, so I had to learn a lot on my own and seek out specialized training abroad.

When the Venezuelan economy collapsed due to hyperinflation in 2015, it forced me to pivot and look for opportunities in other countries. I initially moved to Panama to continue my solar efforts, but the market there was too early-stage for solar energy to take off, making it difficult to succeed.

Another major challenge came when I decided to move to California. Even though I had extensive experience in Latin America, I lacked the local experience needed to obtain a contractor’s license. It took time and effort to find the right opportunity to gain that experience, and then I had to pass a series of difficult exams to get licensed. Starting my business from scratch in a competitive market was also tough. I worked 16-hour days, balancing a full-time job with growing my business on the side. Managing 91 commercial projects while also trying to build a company was extremely demanding.

Despite these struggles, I’m proud of the progress I’ve made. It’s been a lot of hard work and persistence, but I’ve been able to overcome these obstacles and continue to grow both personally and professionally.

We’ve been impressed with AICON SOLAR, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business specializes in providing solar energy solutions, energy storage systems and EV chargers with a focus on both residential and commercial projects. We offer a range of services, including system design, installation, and maintenance, all tailored to maximize energy efficiency and sustainability. Our mission is to make solar energy more accessible to individuals and businesses, helping them reduce their carbon footprint while lowering energy costs.

What sets us apart is our deep expertise in solar energy and our inhouse electrical engineering department, which come from over 15 years of experience in the industry. We’ve worked on a wide variety of projects, from the first grid-tied solar system in Venezuela to large-scale commercial installations and remote projects in challenging locations, like providing power to indigenous communities in the Amazon. Our international experience, coupled with our local knowledge of the California market, allows us to offer cutting-edge solutions that are both efficient and reliable.

We’re known for our commitment to quality, customer service, and our ability to deliver results in a timely and cost-effective manner. We’re not just a solar company—we’re a partner in helping our clients transition to renewable energy with confidence. One of the things I’m most proud of is the impact we’ve made in promoting solar energy in areas where it was previously uncommon. From pioneering solar projects in Venezuela to helping businesses and homeowners in California reduce their energy costs, we’ve always stayed true to our values of sustainability and innovation.

What I want readers to know about our brand is that we’re more than just a service provider. We’re a dedicated team of professionals who are passionate about solar energy and sustainability. We work closely with each client to understand their needs and goals, ensuring that they get the most effective solar solutions. Our expertise, personalized service, and dedication to quality make us a trusted choice for anyone looking to adopt solar energy.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5-10 years, I see the solar energy industry continuing to grow and evolve rapidly, driven by both technological advancements and increasing global demand for clean energy solutions. A few key trends I expect to see include:

-Energy Storage Advancements: As solar energy adoption increases, the need for efficient and cost-effective energy storage solutions will become even more critical. With improvements in battery technology, we’ll likely see solar systems paired with more advanced energy storage solutions, allowing homeowners and businesses to store excess energy for use during non-sunny hours. This will make solar more reliable and increase its overall appeal.

-Decreasing Costs and Greater Affordability: Solar technology has already become much more affordable over the past decade, and I expect this trend to continue as manufacturing processes improve and economies of scale kick in. As costs decrease, solar will become even more accessible, enabling wider adoption across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors, including areas that were previously underrepresented.

-Smart Grids and Integration: With the rise of smart home technology, we can expect more seamless integration between solar systems, energy storage, and grid infrastructure. The concept of the “smart grid” will gain traction, allowing solar power to be more efficiently managed and distributed, leading to smarter, more responsive energy systems.

-Policy Support and Global Sustainability Goals: Governments worldwide are increasingly setting ambitious sustainability and net-zero emissions goals. This will drive more policy support for solar energy, with incentives and regulatory frameworks designed to encourage adoption. Additionally, as more companies and countries commit to sustainability, solar energy will play a central role in meeting these targets.

-Solar as a Service: Another trend I anticipate is the growth of solar as a service. Rather than purchasing systems outright, more consumers may opt for Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) or leasing models. This shift will make solar more accessible to a broader audience, especially those who may not have the upfront capital to invest in a full solar installation.

Overall, the future of solar energy is incredibly bright, with technological advancements, policy support, and shifting consumer preferences leading to widespread adoption. It’s an exciting time to be in the industry, and I believe the next 5-10 years will bring significant progress towards making solar energy a mainstream solution for powering our homes and businesses sustainably.
