Today we’d like to introduce you to Allie Gibson.
Hi Allie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born in San Diego, but went to college to study advertising at the University of Oregon. After graduating, I returned to San Diego and have built my business and family here. I have been living in Downtown for nearly 10 years and am in love with this city. We pack two adults, a toddler, a dog, and a cat into our little place and truly take advantage of city living.
I was drawn to advertising from an early age. I know that sounds weird, but I started doing videography, photography, and graphic design (with the tools that were available to me at the time, namely Microsoft Paint and iMovie) before I was even in high school. I worked at traditional marketing agencies during college, then went in-house at a San Diego brewing company when I graduated.
When that role ended, I did what any sensible creative spirit does: bartended for a different local craft beverage company and wrote a novel. When COVID shut down the bar, I began freelancing marketing services.
I landed at a digital marketing agency where I was doing really great work for not so great clients. And I thought, “I could be doing this work more successfully if I were choosing who I wanted to work with and working for myself.”
In 2022, I had my son and my time became precious. I started building Growth Story in the late-night hours after he’d gone to sleep and officially launched in 2023.
Growth Story is a beautiful amalgamation of two things I’ve always loved: storytelling and design.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Smooth! Ha-ha.
When I first started Growth Story, I had a tiny baby at home with me every day. I worked during nap windows, cycled between being a mom and being an entrepreneur dozens of times throughout the day, and pulled late nights after bedtime.
I brought all the wrong things with me from the agency world. I started working with the same systems and even the same poor-fit industry niche as my previous agency. I said yes to projects that weren’t aligned with what I actually wanted to build, and those projects stretched on and on.
I somehow got caught up in trying to recreate a version of something that wasn’t even working for the agency I left in the first place. Let’s blame it on the sleep deprivation.
When I let go of what I carried with me from previous roles, I struggled to choose a niche that was a good fit for me. When you’re trying to build revenue, turning away work feels terrifying. What if I say no to this project and nothing else comes? What if being too specific in targeting pushes opportunities away?
When my son started daycare, I felt like the world opened up. I had more time to focus on an aligned vision for Growth Story.
The realization that threaded through all of it: I had been building reactively instead of intentionally. I was making decisions based on what I thought I should do instead of what I actually wanted to create.
Now I design my business meticulously. I choose clients who energize me, I protect my time fiercely, and I trust that saying no to the wrong things makes room for the right ones.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Growth Story?
Growth Story is a boutique marketing studio specializing in story-led branding and website design. We help professional service providers turn their expertise into compelling brands that make their ideal clients say, “This is exactly who I need.”
Our brands tell stories backed by data-informed strategy. That means we’re combining audience insights, data from specific search activity through Google or AI tools, and the brand’s unique positioning with the clear yet juicy emotional goodness that makes us human.
The world is being inundated with robot-written garbage. It’s repetitive, overly wordy, and doesn’t speak to the things we, as people, respond best to. That’s why I specialize in translating complex expertise into clear, compelling stories.
My clients are brilliant at what they do, but they struggle to communicate that value to the people who need them most. I bridge that gap. I’ve created a service model where every client starts from the same strategic foundation, which means better results and no wasted time.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
We had San Diego Chargers season tickets growing up and some of my happiest memories took place at Qualcomm stadium. I was also there for that fateful final game (if you know, you know). As a third-gen San Diegan, I’m acutely aware of the heartbreak that comes from following San Diego sports. But there have been a few bright spots over the years…
