Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea Lopez.
Hi Andrea, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have worked in Accounting for 15 years and have worked in the Retail, Information Technology and Non-Profit industries, I have used my knowledge in Accounting to help small business manage their books while helping them understand the importance of properly managing their book. I also help small business owners with meeting their tax obligations in a timely manner throughout the year and at Tax time.
In 2019 I had a friend reach out to asking for help to fix their tax return because they had filed incorrectly as a sole proprietor when he should have filed as an S-Corp. He knew I worked in accounting and figured I could figure it out. Through the years I had help family members file their taxes, but not for a business. I was nervous I used my knowledge of accounting and reading through the tax law to complete his S-Corp return. Once I completed the return I told him he may have to pay someone to look it over, just to make sure, so he did. The CPA he hired asked me if it was my first time doing a business return, I told it was and he was surprised and encouraging, he said I should consider looking into becoming a tax preparer. I didn’t put my thought into it until the pandemic I needed to find way supplement my income with the uncertinity of the time. So I decide to spend my nights during covid to work towards my license. In May of 2020 I obtained my license and decide to reach out to the many people who went into hustle mode by starting their own small business during covid and started sharing basic tax information with them and offering myself as a resource.
I have now wrapped up my 4th tax season and had the privilage to work with Small businesses throughout San Diego & Los Angeles. I have been able to grow my business primarily through word mouth, and during the last 3 tax season, I had the opportunity to present small business owners, through the Jacob Center’s Business accelerator program a Business Tax 101 Presentation.
Throughout the years I have been able to meet and work with some great people. I look forward to more opportunities to work with other small businesses with their, Bookkeeping, Taxes and Payroll.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly the hardest part is just putting yourself out there as a service provider to other business owners. Also coming to the realization that sometimes you are compatible with others to maintain a healthy business relationship.
Open communication is key especially when we are juggling multiple responsibilities, work, kids and maintaining personal boundaries.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Small Business & Individual Tax Services?
I provide Bookkeeping, Tax & payroll services to small businesses. Although businesses are paying me to provide a service, I also help business owners understand their financials and walk them through their returns. Since starting my business it amazes me how many people don’t understand their tax situation and often time don’t even know what’s in their tax return. I provide advice to minimize tax liability but also explain the “Why’ behind it.
I work full time during normal business hours. I provide evening and weekend service hours.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
In all honesty with constant changes in the realm of taxes I am not quite sure, but I hope to be able to continue to be a resource to others, and build business relationships.
