Community Highlights: Meet Armand King of Walk With Me Impact

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Armand King.

Armand King

Hi Armand, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
From ages 13 to 15, I experienced homelessness, but not in the way many imagined. There were no nights under bridges or in tents; instead, my family and I drifted from one friend’s home to another, never having a place to truly call our own.

During these formative years, a particularly harsh moment came one night when overwhelmed by hunger, I reached out to my father for help, only to be starkly rejected with words that severed our ties: “I’m not your dad, pretend I’m not your dad anymore.” This rejection thrust me into the role of family provider, a role I was unprepared for but determined to fulfill.

By the time I entered high school, my resilient mother had managed to secure an apartment for us, stabilizing our living situation. It was then that I met a group of individuals who would profoundly shape my life. We were a mix of foster youth and those gang-affiliated, all lacking a father figure, coming together to form a tight-knit brotherhood we termed a “clique” rather than a gang. Despite the hardships we faced, including the tragic loss of our friend Lawrence, who was fatally shot, our bond remained unbreakable.

Reflecting back, the absence of adult guidance or mentorship during these turbulent times was painfully evident. We were left to navigate our grief and challenges alone, often resorting to substances to numb the pain. The cyclical pattern of mourning and substance abuse underscored the profound need for mentorship—a need that was not met by us.

My own path led me to incarceration at 21 for a nonviolent cannabis offense, where I spent time in nine different institutions across the United States. This period of confinement was a pivotal chapter in my life, marking the beginning of a profound transformation. Upon my release, I was fortunate to meet Bazil, an older mentor who recognized and nurtured my potential, providing me with the stability and support I needed to avoid falling back into old habits.

The realization that the clique I had formed in my youth had grown into a larger community without positive role models spurred me into action. I began to mentor these young individuals, drawing from my own experiences to guide them towards a better path. My commitment to mentorship expanded into a broader mission, leading me to create impactful programs aimed at supporting at-risk individuals and neglected communities.

In 2021, with the help of my childhood friend Emma Anderson, we launched Walk with Me Impact. This business creates educational materials and training for anyone who works with at-risk youth. I also work as a federal and state court expert and author.

Throughout the years, I have mentored many, like my mentee Vincent, watching them transform their lives dramatically. Yet, the journey has also been marked by personal losses, including the devastating news of my friend Richard’s death, which brought home the harsh realities of the challenges we face.

Today, I continue to dedicate my life to this mission. The path has not been easy, and the emotional toll has been heavy, but the impact of genuine, experienced-based mentorship—the kind that reaches into the depths of one’s struggles and offers a way out—is undeniable. It is a transformative force, one that I am committed to fostering as long as I am able.

As I reflect on my journey and the transformative power of mentorship, I urge others to consider the impact they can have. To those who have the capacity to guide and influence, I say: step forward. The role of a mentor is not just to guide but to empower, to transform lives, and to heal communities. Let us not wait until it is too late.

Let us act now, with hearts full of compassion and determination, to mentor the next generation. For in their success and well-being, we find our own fulfillment and the true essence of community upliftment.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As a mentor deeply involved in guiding at-risk youth, my journey has been one of profound personal and professional challenges. My experiences of homelessness and navigating the complex realms of gang affiliation and incarceration have equipped me with a unique perspective on the difficulties these young individuals face. Yet, translating such personal trials into constructive guidance remains a daunting task.

Each mentoring session is a reminder of my own turbulent past, often rekindling the emotional hardships I endured. Engaging with youth who mirror my former self brings both a sense of urgency and a heavy emotional burden. The challenge of guiding effectively while grappling with the memories of personal losses—such as my friends Lawrence, Richard, William, and Kenny—is a delicate balance. These experiences empower me to connect and empathize deeply, yet they also require a continual process of personal healing and resilience.

Despite the challenges, the rewards of mentoring are undeniable. Witnessing the transformative growth of mentees like Vincent, who have overcome significant obstacles and are now forging paths of success, reinforces the impact of dedicated mentorship. However, this role also involves confronting and managing the grief of past traumas, which resurfaces in the face of my mentees’ struggles.

The responsibility to act not just as a guide but also as a surrogate family member adds another layer of complexity to these youths. My commitment often extends beyond mere guidance, dipping into personal sacrifices to ensure their safety and progress. The emotional investment is immense, and the line between mentor and personal involvement is continually blurred.

Navigating these dynamics is an ongoing challenge that requires a deep well of empathy, a robust support system, and an unwavering commitment to the well-being of both me and the youth I serve. My journey as a mentor is a testament to the power of resilience and dedication. It is a path marked by both heartache and hope, demanding but ultimately rewarding beyond measure.

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about Walk with Me Impact?
Walk With Me Impact is a dynamic initiative dedicated to transforming the lives of at-risk youth through comprehensive mentorship and educational programs.

As the Director of Program Development, I, Armand King, am deeply committed to devising strategies and curricula that not only engage but profoundly impact the lives of those we serve. My role involves overseeing the creation and implementation of innovative educational content, such as the Walk with Me Impact curriculum and the upcoming “Planting Seeds” mentoring coloring book.

Specialization and Lived Experience: My specialization lies in designing programs that cater specifically to the needs of individuals coming from backgrounds marked by gang involvement, substance abuse, and other high-risk environments.

What sets me apart in this field is my own lived experience. Having navigated through the challenges of such a toxic life, I bring authenticity and a deep understanding of the complexities faced by our youth. This firsthand knowledge equips me with the unique ability to connect with and inspire those who are still entangled in or vulnerable to such lifestyles.

Walk With Me Impact Curriculum: The curriculum I’ve developed focuses on practical life skills, emotional intelligence, and strategies for making positive life choices. It is tailored to prevent youth from falling into the same traps that once ensnared me, providing them with the tools they need to navigate away from potential pitfalls and towards successful futures.

Planting Seeds Mentoring Coloring Book: The “Planting Seeds” project is an extension of our educational outreach, designed to engage younger audiences through interactive and creative learning experiences. This coloring book is not just an artistic activity but a powerful tool for instilling early lessons on resilience, decision-making, and personal development.

Public Speaking and Advocacy: As a seasoned public speaker, I share my experiences and insights at various educational forums, workshops, and conferences, advocating for the power of effective mentorship and the critical need for community involvement in supporting at-risk populations. My talks are designed to enlighten, inspire, and call to action, emphasizing the importance of early intervention and dedicated support for youth.

The Walk with Me Impact Brand: Walk with Me Impact is more than just a program; it’s a movement dedicated to stopping the cycle of youth entering into toxic life paths. Our services range from in-school workshops and community outreach programs to comprehensive training sessions for mentors and educators. Each offering is crafted to meet the specific needs of the communities we serve, with a focus on sustainable impact and long-term change.

In sum, Walk with Me Impact embodies a commitment to nurturing potential and fostering positive change through education, mentorship, and community engagement. Our mission is rooted in the belief that every young person deserves the opportunity to lead a healthy and productive life, regardless of their past or the challenges they face. By leveraging lived experience and specialized knowledge, we strive to build a brighter future for our youth and the communities they live in.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I appreciate that San Diego offers access to a diverse array of cultures, allowing you to choose from a variety of vibes depending on your mood at any given time.

I really hate how expensive it is to live here. A person has to literally have a full-time job and a side hustle just to scrape by.
