Today we’d like to introduce you to Ati Williams
Hi Ati, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey into real estate and renovation started completely by accident. In 2004 I bought my first home in the suburbs of Washington DC without giving much thought to what came next. My friends constantly complained that it was too far to visit so I decided to spruce it up to make it more inviting. I painted the walls added new carpet and even planted some flowers in the front yard. It was meant to be a simple upgrade but six months later I sold the house and made more money than I ever expected. That was when everything clicked.
What started as a small project turned into a passion. I realized I loved transforming spaces and seeing the potential in places others overlooked. From there I jumped into real estate development flipping homes and learning everything I could about construction and design. I eventually became a licensed general contractor and launched Honeycomb Design and Build (heyhoneycomb.com) to bring thoughtful high quality renovations to homeowners. Along the way I had the opportunity to host design shows on HGTV and Netflix, such as Hack My Home and DC Flippers, which allowed me to share my love for renovation with an even bigger audience. But at the core of everything I do is the same excitement I felt after selling that first house—taking a space and turning it into something truly special.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Ati Williams’ journey in real estate and renovation has been anything but smooth. As a Black woman an immigrant and a licensed general contractor in a male-dominated industry, she has faced her fair share of challenges. Early in her career she often walked onto job sites only to be mistaken for an assistant rather than the person in charge. She had to work twice as hard to earn respect and prove that she belonged in spaces where women especially women of color were rarely seen.
Beyond breaking barriers in the industry running a business has come with its own set of struggles. Construction is unpredictable and projects do not always go as planned. Through it all she has remained focused on sharpening her skills and building a company that prioritizes quality integrity and expertise.
Despite the challenges Ati has never let obstacles define her. Instead, they have shaped her into a stronger leader a more skilled builder, and a passionate advocate for others forging their own paths in real estate and design.
