Community Highlights: Meet Caitlin McCann, PPSC LCSW of Caitlin McCann Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Caitlin McCann, PPSC LCSW.

Hi Caitlin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I became a therapist as I have a deep sense of empathy for others. From an early age, I found myself deeply impacted by the struggles of those around me, but also finding happiness and rejoicing in others’ successes. As I grew up, I learned I had a knack for listening, encouraging, and ultimately, helping others; lending hand to my ultimate career choice in clinical social work. Fascinated by the legal system, I found myself gravitating to this area of work.

In the past, I have served in the role of a Child Welfare social worker where I investigated child abuse and neglect, and made recommendations to the Juvenile Court as needed. Enjoying the legal aspect of this work, I then moved to San Diego’s Superior Court, where I conducted mediations with families to create custody schedules and parenting plans. Lastly, I worked in school districts in north and south San Diego as a elementary through high school therapist before I opened my own private practice specializing in working with families touched by the Court system. I presently provide individual therapy, co-parenting counseling and mediation preparation for children, adults and families virtually and in-person in my San Marcos office.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Because I work with those involved in the Court system, there is a lot of legality involved and many players working with families, including judges, attorneys, and Guardian Ad Litems. It can be a lot with so many professionals involved and varying personalities, but it has also been a great opportunity to learn about the interworkings of our Court systems to better help my clients navigate through it.

We’ve been impressed with Caitlin McCann Therapy, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Because the nature of Court can be adversarial and highly conflictual at times, it typically deters therapists from working in this arena despite a desperate need for support. I’ve found individual and families need to understand what to expect when involved in Court, how best to prepare for upcoming hearings and communication support that reduces conflict and offers solutions. I offer in-person and virtual services inclusive of individual therapy, co-parenting support and mediation preparation to clarify what to expect, teach ways to minimize stress and anxiety during this time, as well as communication skills to reduce conflict and increase clarity.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
A favorite childhood memory I have is taking a yearly summer trip to a lake house we would rent near Yosemite with my parents, siblings and cousins. We would swim from sunrise to sunset, eat allll the soft serve ice cream and have an annual seaweed fight. I look forward to making similar core memories with my family and son as he gets older.
