Community Highlights: Meet Captain John Valente of San Diego Bay Cruises

Today we’d like to introduce you to Captain John Valente.

Hi Captain John, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I like to say that my life has always been tied to the water, even long before I owned a boat. My father’s family is Italian, my mother is from Iceland, and perhaps because of that mix, the ocean has always felt like home. I grew up in New England—first in New London, Connecticut, and later in Rhode Island—surrounded by beaches but without direct access to boating. My first true experience on the water came at summer camp, paddling a canoe. From there, my love for being in, on, or under the water only grew. I became a certified diver in 1986, and my dive log eventually filled with stamps from around the world.

In 1988, I moved to San Diego and immediately fell in love with the maritime lifestyle. My first job was at the Marriott Hotel & Marina—now the Marriott Marquis—where I spent my days looking out at the marina, admiring the boats, and imagining one day owning one. My career eventually shifted into law enforcement, where I served as a Deputy Sheriff for 22 years. While my work had nothing to do with boating, I often found myself daydreaming: Why wait until retirement to get a boat? Why not make memories with my three young sons now?

That question changed everything. I bought my first yacht—a $5,000 fixer-upper—and spent weekends on the bay with my boys. A few years later, I upgraded to a second boat and restored it with the help of a contractor who casually said, “This turned out really nice. You should charter it.” That single comment was the spark that eventually became San Diego Bay Cruises.

What started as one small 6-pack charter yacht evolved into San Diego’s first—and still largest—private yacht charter network. Today, I own three vessels and represent approximately 25 others, offering guests every type of experience from intimate proposals to large-scale corporate events.

It wasn’t a straight path, but it was the right one—built through passion, curiosity, and what I often call a series of “happy accidents.”

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not. The journey was full of challenges, but each one pushed the business forward.

My introduction to boat ownership began with an old yacht that needed constant repairs. I didn’t grow up around boats, so everything was a learning curve. Later, when I bought a larger vessel with the goal of converting it into a commercial charter yacht, the process was far more extensive—and expensive—than I expected. Working through U.S. Coast Guard inspections, safety compliance, mechanical issues, and renovations took over a year and more than $200,000 in upgrades.

Running a referral-based charter network also came with its own learning curve. There’s no manual for building a network of independent yacht owners and captains, each with different schedules, vessels, expectations, and business personalities. I also learned quickly that yacht maintenance is a never-ending job.

But the biggest challenge was trusting my instincts while navigating an industry I hadn’t planned to join. I didn’t begin with a business plan or investors—just a love for the water, a willingness to work, and a desire to help people make memories.

Everything I built came from trial, error, resilience, and thousands of hours of hands-on work.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
San Diego Bay Cruises has grown into one of the most trusted and comprehensive private yacht charter providers on the West Coast. What began as a small, hands-on operation has evolved into a company that owns and operates its own vessels—Antonina, Bella Luna, and Raven—while representing roughly 25 additional yachts across San Diego Bay. This network allows the company to accommodate everything from intimate outings to large-scale events of up to 1,200 guests.

The company is known for highly customizable experiences, professional USCG-credentialed crew, and impeccably maintained vessels. Their popular yacht, Bella Luna, is a Coast Guard–inspected vessel licensed for up to 49 passengers and equipped with a full bar, spacious deck layout, and panoramic bay views.

What sets San Diego Bay Cruises apart is its service philosophy: they aim never to turn a guest away. Whether someone needs a specific type of vessel, a unique celebration, or last-minute coordination, the company finds a way to make it happen. San Diego Bay Cruises is more than a yacht charter company—we’re a network, a community, and above all, a memory-making company. Built on relationships, safety, and a genuine passion for the water, San Diego Bay Cruises remains dedicated to creating memorable experiences for every guest who steps aboard.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud that we built San Diego’s first and largest private yacht charter network—without investors, without a roadmap, and without cutting corners on safety or service. It’s a business built on relationships, integrity, and passion for the water.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
This business exists because many people believed in me—or offered guidance—even when I didn’t have a clear plan.

– My family, especially my sons, inspired me to buy my first yacht and create memories on the water.

– The restoration contractor who rebuilt my second yacht gave me the crucial push: “You ought to charter it.” That one sentence changed everything.

– Fellow captains like Capt. Ray Beck, who embraced the idea of mutual referrals and helped expand the network, played a major role in shaping the collaborative model we still use today.

– Early charter partners who let me list their vessels on my website and trusted me with their business.

– My administrative team, engineer, divers, and captains, who keep the vessels running and the operation seamless.

– Guests—thousands of them—who shared their birthdays, weddings, and milestones with us, helping the business grow through word-of-mouth and repeat bookings.

This company is not something I built alone. It is the result of community, teamwork, and the support of people who saw the vision before it was fully formed.
