Today we’d like to introduce you to Chen Levy
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
SoomSoom, meaning “sesame” in Hebrew, reflects the heart of the bakery.
As an Israeli Jewish baker with a deep passion for baking, I’ve poured my heart into creating a bakery that honors my heritage. Inspired by my family’s roots in Turkey and Morocco, each treat at SoomSoom showcases the rich history and vibrant flavors of Sephardic Jewish traditions. My goal is to share the warmth and authenticity of these time-honored recipes, bringing a taste of my cultural heritage to every delicious creation.
My vision is to create a bakery that honors and celebrates the rich cultural heritage of Sephardic Jewish traditions through meticulously crafted, authentic baked goods. My goal is to provide not just delicious treats, but also a warm, nostalgic experience that connects people to the rich history and vibrant traditions of my heritage.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Building a business on my own has certainly been a challenging journey. As my first venture, especially in the United States, I faced a steep learning curve navigating the intricacies of the local business landscape. However, I found that creating a detailed to-do list with specific requirements and deadlines was immensely helpful in ensuring everything ran smoothly.
We’ve been impressed with SoomSoom Bakery, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At SoomSoom, we specialize in crafting authentic Israeli and Sephardic baked goods that celebrate the rich culinary traditions of Jewish-Sephardic heritage. Each item is thoughtfully created using traditional recipes passed down through generations, inspired by my family’s roots in Turkey and Morocco. Our menu features a variety of treats, from Jerusalem Bagels to unique cookies, all infused with the distinctive flavors that are central to Sephardic cuisine.
What sets SoomSoom apart is our deep commitment to authenticity and quality. We strive to preserve the cultural significance of our recipes while ensuring that every bite resonates with nostalgia. Each treat is made from scratch, using high-quality ingredients that honor the traditions we represent.
I’m particularly proud of how SoomSoom has become a bridge between cultures, allowing customers to experience the warmth and richness of Sephardic Jewish traditions. We aim to foster a sense of community through our bakery, where everyone can find a taste of heritage, whether they’re familiar with these recipes or discovering them for the first time.
Ultimately, I want the readers to know that SoomSoom is more than just a bakery, it’s a celebration of culture, history, and connection. We invite everyone to experience the flavors of Sephardic traditions and create their own memories.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
