Today we’d like to introduce you to Debbie Keckeisen.
Hi Debbie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m a native San Diegan, and real estate has been part of my world for most of my life. My family has been involved in the San Diego real estate market for more than 50 years, but my own path to the industry was anything but traditional. Healthcare, entrepreneurship, and mortgage lending all came before real estate, and each experience shaped the way I serve my clients today.
I graduated from UC San Diego, where I was also a collegiate athlete. I started my professional life in the medical field, working in physical therapy with neurological and stroke rehabilitation, as well as geriatric rehabilitation. I spent a lot of time working with older adults and their families during periods when their lives were changing significantly. At the time, I had no idea how much that experience would eventually influence the way I approach my real estate business.
From healthcare, I moved into entrepreneurship and owned and operated two restaurants in San Diego and Encinitas. That experience taught me the importance of hard work, accountability, problem-solving, and exceptional customer service, qualities I continue to bring to the way I work with my real estate clients today.
My next chapter was mortgage lending, which eventually led me into residential real estate sales. I now have more than 21 years of experience in the real estate industry. Having worked on the lending side as well as the sales side gives me a broader understanding of a transaction and allows me to look at real estate from both a financial and property perspective.
One area of my business that has become particularly meaningful to me is helping families with trust and estate sales, downsizing, and transitioning an elderly parent from a longtime family home. I’ve had several opportunities to work with families in these situations, and I began to see a natural connection between this work and my earlier experience in geriatric rehabilitation.
When an elderly parent needs to move, or a family inherits a home through a trust or estate, it is rarely as simple as putting a house on the market. There may be decades of belongings to sort through, repairs to consider, family members with different opinions, an executor or trustee who lives outside San Diego, or a parent who is understandably having a difficult time leaving a home filled with memories.
That’s where I feel I can really make a difference.
My job is not simply to tell a family, “Here’s what we need to do to sell the house.” I want them to understand all of their options first. Sometimes preparing the property for the open market to maximize its value is the right decision. Sometimes more limited preparation makes sense. And sometimes selling as-is may be the best solution for that particular family.
I’ve developed relationships with trusted resources who can step in when needed, including estate-sale professionals, attorneys, organizers, movers, junk-removal services, contractors, designers, and staging professionals. I can help coordinate those pieces so the family doesn’t have to figure everything out on their own. The goal is to look at the entire situation, not just the real estate transaction, and create a plan based on what that family actually needs.
That philosophy defines how I approach my entire business. I believe every client deserves transparency, responsiveness, and accountability. They should understand their options, know what I am doing on their behalf, and feel comfortable asking questions throughout the process.
Whether I’m helping someone buy their first home, sell a high-value luxury property, invest in real estate, handle a trust or estate sale, or help a parent downsize, I start by asking what they ultimately want to accomplish. Then we build the strategy around that goal.
San Diego is much more than the market where I sell real estate. It’s my hometown, and I genuinely love this city. I was born and raised here, my parents grew up here, I went to UC San Diego, raised my family here, owned businesses here, and have had the privilege of watching San Diego grow and evolve through every stage of my life. There’s a sense of pride that comes with being able to build my career and serve people in the community that has given me so much.
My connection to real estate also started at home. My parents were self-employed, owned businesses, and managed multiple rental properties. I watched them work seven days a week, build something of their own, and invest in real estate as a way to create stability and opportunity for our family. Their work ethic had a tremendous influence on me.
More importantly, I saw firsthand what owning and investing in real estate can do over time. It can be so much more than owning a home or property. It can create financial security, open doors, build wealth, and have a meaningful impact on a family for generations. That lesson has stayed with me throughout my life and is a big part of why I believe so strongly in what I do today.
I know San Diego not only as a real estate professional, but as someone who has lived a life here. I’ve been a student, athlete, business owner, homeowner, mother, and real estate professional in this city. I know the neighborhoods, but I also understand the lifestyle and the people behind them. Being able to help others put down roots, make smart real estate decisions, or move into their next chapter here in my hometown makes what I do very personal to me.
What motivates me now is being able to bring together my experience, local knowledge, and network of resources to help people through decisions that can have a significant impact on their lives and families. I want my clients to feel that they have someone in their corner who understands the bigger picture, gives them clear options, and can bring the right people and resources together when they need them most.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road. My life and career have taken several unexpected turns, and there have been times when circumstances required me to take action and move in a new direction. But some of the most challenging periods have also been the ones that pushed me to grow the most.
Each career change meant becoming a student again. Moving from healthcare to owning restaurants, then into mortgage lending and eventually residential real estate required me to learn new industries, develop new skills, and sometimes start from the ground up. I’ve always been willing to study, ask questions, learn from people around me, and remain open to growth.
One of the biggest professional challenges came with the mortgage and housing market meltdown in 2008. It was a massive change that no individual had control over, and it transformed the industry. I had to pivot again, adapt to a very different environment, and learn a new way of doing business. That experience reinforced an important lesson for me: you can’t always control what happens around you, but you can control how you respond to it.
Through all of those changes, what has mattered most is staying true to my core values. Industries change. Markets change. Technology changes. Life can change unexpectedly. But integrity, accountability, responsiveness, hard work, and doing what you say you are going to do should not change.
Those values have ultimately become the pillars of my business and, I believe, a large part of my success. I believe in being transparent with my clients, giving them clear options, being accountable for the work I promise to do, and showing up when they need me. Sometimes that also means having an honest conversation or giving advice that may not be the easiest thing to hear, but is in their best interest.
I’ve reinvented myself more than once, and I’m still constantly learning and looking for ways to grow. What I’ve learned is that growth doesn’t require changing who you are at your core. For me, it has been about adapting to change while staying grounded in the values that have guided me through every chapter of my life and career. Those values are now the foundation of how I run my business and how I want every client to experience working with me.
We’ve been impressed with Compass , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I think what sets me apart is the combination of my real estate and mortgage lending experience, my background in health care and as a business owner, my lifelong connection to San Diego and resources I’m able to leverage for my clients.
I’m a native San Diegan with more than 21 years of real estate industry experience, including a strong background in mortgage lending before moving into residential sales. That financial foundation is a significant differentiator in the way I represent my clients.
My professional experience also extends well beyond real estate. I’ve worked in healthcare and owned and operated businesses in different industries, including two restaurants in San Diego and Encinitas. Those experiences taught me how to work with people, manage challenges, solve problems, and understand what exceptional service and accountability really mean in running a business.
Being a native San Diegan and longtime local business owner has also allowed me to build a broad network throughout the community. My relationships extend beyond real estate to business owners and trusted professionals across many different industries. When a client needs a resource or we encounter a challenge, I can often connect them with the right person to help. That network becomes especially valuable when a transaction involves more than simply buying or selling a home.
Another important differentiator is how I leverage technology. Compass has invested more than a billion dollars in its technology platform, and I’ve made a commitment to learning how to put those tools to work for my clients. As a multi-year participant in the CSC Coaching program, I’ve invested in mastering Compass technology and using it strategically to inform decisions, identify opportunities, market properties, reach buyers, and provide clients with greater insight throughout the process. Having access to powerful technology is one thing. Knowing how to use it effectively for your clients is what matters.
I’m proud to be aligned with a company that continues to lead the industry, innovate, and challenge the traditional way real estate is done. That mindset aligns with my own. I don’t believe in doing something simply because “that’s how it has always been done.” I want to understand what is changing, continue learning, and embrace better strategies that create an advantage for the people I represent.
I also don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to real estate. Every client has different circumstances, priorities, and goals. My job is to understand what they are trying to accomplish, give them clear options, explain the advantages and potential tradeoffs, and then create a strategy specifically around them.
That becomes particularly valuable in my work with trust and estate sales, downsizing, and families helping an aging parent transition from a longtime home. These situations can involve much more than a traditional real estate transaction. My experience and network allow me to bring together trusted professionals and resources to help manage the different pieces while I guide the overall real estate strategy.
Ultimately, what sets me apart is how all of these experiences come together for my clients. My mortgage background gives me financial perspective, my years in real estate give me transaction and market experience, and my business background and lifelong San Diego connections give me an extensive network and a strong understanding of service.
The foundation underneath all of it is how I work: transparency, accountability, responsiveness, integrity, and follow-through. Those are the standards I’ve built my business around. Experience, knowledge, technology, and resources are valuable, but how you put them to work on behalf of your client is what really matters.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I love most about San Diego is the incredible variety we have right in our own backyard. As a native San Diegan, I’ve experienced this city through so many stages of my life: growing up here, attending UC San Diego, being a collegiate athlete, owning businesses in San Diego and Encinitas, raising my family here, and now helping people find their own place within our communities.
We have beaches, bays, mountains, lakes, trails, and the desert all within reach. You can start your morning at the beach and, within a relatively short drive, be hiking in the mountains or heading toward the desert. Add our amazing weather, and it creates a lifestyle where being outdoors and staying active can be part of everyday life.
I also love how different our communities feel from one another. La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Encinitas, Mission Bay, and our inland neighborhoods each have their own personality and sense of place. You can drive 20 or 30 minutes and have a completely different San Diego experience.
Having raised my family here makes me appreciate San Diego from another perspective as well. Sports, beaches, schools, local businesses, and neighborhood traditions have all been part of our family life. Some of what I love most isn’t necessarily found in the major attractions. It’s the everyday experiences and sense of community that become part of your life when you call San Diego home.
If there’s a downside, it’s watching some of that neighborhood character change as San Diego continues to grow. We absolutely need more housing, and thoughtful development is necessary. At the same time, increased density and overbuilding can affect the individual character of our communities and put additional pressure on traffic and infrastructure.
The cost of living is also a real concern. As someone who grew up here and is now watching another generation come of age in San Diego, I see how difficult it can be for younger people and families to afford to stay and build their futures here.
I want San Diego to continue evolving, but I hope we can find the right balance between growth and preserving the natural beauty, distinct neighborhoods, local businesses, and sense of community that have always made this such a special place to call home.
