Community Highlights: Meet Desmond Jasper of Steady State Performance

Today we’d like to introduce you to Desmond Jasper.

Hi Desmond, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Everything started for me once things did not work out in the corporate world. I had two jobs both which made me understand early on that I have to be passionate about something I do every single day because I want to fulfill my purpose. I grew up playing sports so fitness has always been a huge part of my life. Once I got my first training certification, I hit the ground running. I was living in Virginia at the time and I started at a private gym called Empire Fitness, which was where I learned the game of personal training. Fast forward a year later, I was offered a position as a head trainer at a brand new gym in VA called Retrain. Retrain gave me the opportunity to run group classes which was all new, I gained experience working with people of all ages, with different restrictions, etc., so I was forced to learn a lot at a faster rate. I stayed at Retrain for about a year before I moved out to San Diego.

In San Diego, I started as a coach at F45 while simultaneously trying to build my PT clientele at a private gym which was called Thrive House. I walked away from F45 9 months in and decided to make the leap to train clients full time. As my business began to pick up the owner at Thrive House took noticed and offered me a 50/50 partnership in the business. The week after this took place COVID hit and it changed many aspects of the business. Although we lost members, we were still able to maintain enough to keep the gym going. In January of 2021, it was brought to my attention that my business partner was leaving San Diego, meaning I had to opportunity to buy out half of the business to take full ownership. In April 2021, I took over Thrive House and in May 2021, I changed the name to what now is known as Steady State Performance. It has been a journey of itself but I am blessed that God made a way because I’ve always wanted to own a gym. Everything aligned so it was an easy decision for me to take over.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to get here has been far from smooth but that’s what makes the journey so sweet. I have struggled mentally during tough times and also financially during the slower periods. With that being said, you learn a lot about yourself when you struggle because with the lesson you learn, you can use that for the next time an obstacle comes your way.

As you know, we’re big fans of Steady State Performance. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Steady State Performance is an athletic strength training facility that promotes functional movements which allow you to move better, train smarter and become functionally equipped for your everyday living. We offer small group training as well as personal training depending on your goals.

The brand is deeper than just going in for a workout. Steady State Performance is a mindset that puts you in a constant state to improve your performance both mentally and physically. Improvements in both of these areas allow you to show up daily and push to become your best self. From top to bottom Steady State Performance is about putting your mental and physical health as a priority and seeing the positive impacts it has on every other aspect of your life.

What are your plans for the future?
My plans are to expand into a warehouse when the time is right. My vision for the gym has grown the more time I have spent in this role and it’s been exciting yet scary at the same time because I know some big leaps will need to be made.
