Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr Fatma Deif.
Hi Dr Fatma, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey to Aesthetic Medicine started in my late 20s. At the time, I was in residency when I developed severe cystic acne, happening almost overnight. Acne at any age is traumatizing but nobody expects adult acne. I tried countless creams both over the counter and prescription, in addition to antibiotics, facials, etc. before finally coming across the right tools that helped me. Obtaining clean, clear, healthy skin quickly became a passion. For a long time I felt that acne had been a curse but now when I look back, it shaped my future and led me down a completely different career path that I love.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Once I finished residency in Internal Medicine I went on to do a fellowship in Aesthetic Medicine. Although I still practice Internal Medicine, I find that practicing aesthetics provides the instant gratification for both patient and doctor that is almost never seen in general medicine. People respond better to things they can touch, see, feel, like the skin on their face. We are lucky to live in a time where there are so many tools available for us to use for anti-aging and problematic skin like botox, filler, lasers. The issue now is that there exists so much negativity about botox and filler, mainly because of overuse or misuse. I spend the majority of my time educating patients, correcting misinformation and reinforcing that you can get natural, elegant results when injections are done with the proper technique. Botox and filler are tools that are designed to help make you a better version of yourself, not someone different. Anyone can stick a needle in your face but what you are paying for is the knowledge, skill and expertise of the person injecting you.

What were you like growing up?
I was born and raised here in San Diego and spent a lot of time at the beach. Here in San Diego, our population has a lot of sun exposure which we know leads to accelerated aging, premature wrinkles, sunspots and skin cancer. Early prevention is key. We will all age and nothing can stop that from happening, but good practices and the right tools can slow it down and help you age well. If you want to know how your aging process will go, take a look at your parents. I often get asked, how soon should I start taking care of my skin? Good habits go a long way so the earlier the better. Starting as early as your 20s will only help you in the long run. Aesthetics as well as general medicine isn’t just about quick fixes but rather prevention and forming healthy habits that will keep you looking and feeling your best.
