Community Highlights: Meet Esther Torres of Esther Torres, LMFT

Today we’d like to introduce you to Esther Torres.

Hi Esther, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in San Diego, California. One of my first jobs after graduating from high school was as a teacher’s assistant at an elementary school in the neighborhood of Logan Heights. There, I had the opportunity to work closely with the school counselor and psychologist, and it was during this time that I discovered my passion for helping children, families, and the community.

Inspired by this experience, I decided to pursue a degree in Psychology, and I graduated from San Diego State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. I then continued my studies at the United States International University, where I earned my Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy in the year 2000.

Since then, I have had the privilege of working with families and individuals, helping them navigate challenges and equipping them with the tools they need to improve their lives. My journey in this field has been incredibly rewarding, and I remain committed to making a positive impact in the lives of those I serve.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a significant shift from providing in-person therapy to telehealth. While it was a big adjustment, I ultimately found it to be a positive and convenient way to continue my work. This transition allowed me to expand my services beyond San Diego and reach individuals across California.

We’ve been impressed with Esther Torres, LMFT, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I work in private practice, providing individual psychotherapy through a secure video platform. I specialize in helping individuals experiencing difficulties related to anxiety, depression, substance use, grief, trauma, and life transitions. My approach is rooted in trauma-informed care, and I am trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), which allows me to effectively support clients in their healing journeys.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I believe that fostering a strong therapeutic relationship, where individuals feel safe to explore their inner selves, is of utmost importance. As a lifelong learner, I am committed to continuously educating myself to enhance my clinical skills. This allows me to provide clients with effective techniques and tools that promote self-awareness and help them cultivate greater joy and fulfillment in their lives.
