Today, we’d like to introduce you to Holly Berkley.
Hi Holly, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started my career in website design, online editing, and content development while working with TransWorld Media to develop the first Snowboarding and Skateboarding websites to complement their print magazines. Through this work, I helped cover some of the first live events online, including the 1998 Japan Winter Olympics and the first ESPN X Games.
I went on to work with some of the top digital agencies and brands, assisting with Search Engine Optimization, Online Media Buying, Analytics, and creating Social Media Marketing Strategies. Since then, I have written eight business marketing books and developed the first social media marketing class for San Diego State University, where I taught for over eight years.
Today, I work as an independent Internet Marketing consultant in San Diego, California.
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Early in my career, I was able to work anytime, around the clock, which made it easier to keep up with, learn, and experiment with new technologies and trends.
But when I became a mother of two boys (born less than two years apart), my time became much more restricted. I found it difficult to balance the fast-paced digital marketing world while raising a young family.
Since then, I scaled my business down from 2 offices and full-time employees to working from a home office and depending on my team of talented sub-consultants.
Thanks for sharing that. Maybe you can tell us a bit more about your business next.
My company helps businesses generate more exposure and leads through a combination of proven online marketing techniques tailored to reaching their target audiences and sales goals.

We’re always looking for lessons that can be learned from any situation, including tragic ones like the COVID-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I was working from a home office before the Covid crisis so that part didn’t change much for me.
However, since everyone else had to work from home, too, it did make me feel more confident about my earlier choice to close my offices and simplify things. I noticed a massive shift in the perception of those who work from home versus those who felt the need to be in an office to appear like they had a legitimate business.
I think the crisis opened up people’s minds that there are multiple ways to get work done -and one way is not superior to another. Since Covid, I think that more people agree a workspace can (and should) be tailored to lifestyle and priorities.
