Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Henry.
Hi Jacob, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I had a very hard time finding and keeping a job. 2008 crash made it much harder. I was a young crazy kid. Got in some trouble with the cops. Doing a beer run and they put burglary and conspiracy on my record which made it even harder. I have always had an artist type mind. Being able to zone out for hours and get into what I am doing. I remember watching this zero skateboarding video and saw this dude with full sleeves and I wanted that. So 18 I finally got tattooed. Not that I didn’t try to get tattooed sooner. But the tweaker ran out of motivation or drugs. So I never got the guitar string tattoo I wanted so bad at 16 17. Haha I got into tattooing as a matter of survival. It was so difficult to get into a shop. But finally after bugging the guy who did my first tattoo. He finally agreed I could come and hang out at his shop. And that was it I never left. Tattooing was not only the thing that God used to give me a place in this country. But helped me survive all these years. A system that has never cared or been able to fit people like me into it. Almost 20 years later I still enjoy it. Thankful I have been a small part of it. Although hidden I and very greatful for tattooing because I wouldn’t have been able to survive here without it.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Financial struggles have always been hard. Lack of advertising. Plus I believe in the Bible which a lot of people hate on. But also am hated by the church because I actually read my Bible. Haha
We’ve been impressed with Firma tattoo, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I love high contrast black and grey. Like making everything into an old cartoon. So fun so simple and readable. Takes really crazy stuff and makes it simple enough to read.
