Community Highlights: Meet Jacob Weisfeld of Chub Cruisers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Weisfeld.

Hi Jacob, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Skateboarding came into my life when I was twelve years young in my hometown Dallas, Texas. When I got my first board, I remember looking at it and thinking “I wonder if I’ll ever figure out how to use this new toy”. That challenge became an obsession, making skating the focus of my energy until breaking my leg at sixteen years old. Since then my relationship with skating and my body has changed.

Now, my actions are health oriented and skating is light-hearted. When I moved to San Diego two years ago, real estate investment was my “career path”. One day when I should have been working, I was putting my wake skate on skateboard trucks/wheels and cruising the boardwalk. That board was huge and drew attentions from everyone around. “How has nobody made ridiculously big skateboards?” I thought. Then my entrepreneurial journey began.

I became stoked on the idea of running an online store and started watching tutorials on Shopify. That was 1.5 years ago, since then I have learned to delegate tasks like marketing and web development to professionals and focus on creating great products with good stories and graphics.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My two biggest challenges have been discipline and manufacturing. The entrepreneur’s journey is one of self discovery and self mastery. Being my own boss has realigned my priorities and strengthened my ability to say no. I thought I was avoiding “adulting” by starting my own business, but was actually doing the opposite. Finding a reliable manufacturer and developing a long term relationship is key. I am on my third manufacturer now and think he is a winner, but the journey to get here took over a year. Covid and manufacturing delays has bottle-necked my business and prevented growth, but Chub is on the right path now…or so I think.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Chub Cruisers?
Chub Cruisers are wide skateboards with foam on top for barefoot cruising. Developed with our coastal lifestyle in mind, these are the most comfortable boards on the market. The extra width creates stability for first time riders while the foam top and soft wheels makes pavement feel like water. They are great boards for surfers looking to carve streets when the ocean is flat. Hop on a Chub, cruise to the beach, and feel gratitude and presence wash over your sporadic train of thought. We took our signature board and now offer balance boards, similar to Endo Boards, for balance training at home. Super soft, tie-dye hoodies, shirts and bucket hats also come out of the Chub factory every so often.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory is winning biggest Tuna and biggest overall fish in the Texas International Fishing Tournament. My dad and I have fished the tournament every year since I was four and I always dreamed of bringing in the biggest fish. On this particular day, I got sea sick and we didn’t see a fish until twenty minutes before the tournament ended at 4;40PM. Then two massive yellow fin tunas came darting through our chum line, splashing clear gulf water five feet up in the air. I ended up hooking the tuna at 4:59PM and fighting it for 1.5 hours with no fighting chair. We got to the weigh in on the smallest boat with the biggest fish, nothing can compare to that.
