After retiring from military service, Jay B. transformed his decades of experience into a thriving business. Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not. The journey’s been full of ups and downs. I started cutting hair at fourteen with no formal training—just figuring it out on my own using clippers and my nephews’ heads. In the Navy, I had to adapt to cutting hair in tight, unpredictable conditions with limited tools. It taught me discipline and consistency, but it wasn’t easy.
After retiring, transitioning into business ownership brought a whole new set of challenges. Opening PrecisionZ Barbershop in 2022 meant learning how to lead a team, build a brand, and keep clients coming back—not just for a cut, but for an experience. There were slow days and moments of doubt, but I stayed focused. Every struggle sharpened my skills—not just as a barber, but as a business owner and leader.

Located in San Diego, we proudly serve a diverse clientele—from active-duty military to civilians of all backgrounds—with services ranging from custom haircuts and razor shaves to facials, Bigen™ hair coloring, and anti-aging grooming for men.
What sets us apart is our consistency, attention to detail, and commitment to quality. Our talented team of barbers and stylists also provide natural hair and loc care, ensuring clients of all hair types feel seen and serviced. Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
One thing people don’t always realize is that I’m a Navy veteran. Because of how I carry myself and how I work, many don’t immediately connect me to the military—but it’s a huge part of who I am and how I approach everything I do. Beyond that, I’m also a proud father of seven children, and what makes me especially proud is that five of them have served in the military as well, with two currently serving. Family and service run deep in my life, and that sense of discipline, commitment, and pride really shapes the work I put into PrecisionZ Barbershop every day.
