Hi Jillian, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Pangaea Outpost, a unique retail collective in Pacific Beach, California, started as a vision to create a space where culture, and community could merge. The name “Pangaea” draws inspiration from the supercontinent that existed millions of years ago, symbolizing the unity of different cultures and experiences coming together in one place.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Throughout our twenty years in business, we have been so very supported by our Pacific Beach community, and greater San Diego area, and beyond! Many customers from around the country make it a point to visit us every time they come to town. We recognize that the support is no small thing, and we appreciate each and every customer who chooses to spend a hard earned dollar with us because we have seen so many great businesses come and go over these last two decades. It has been great to hear from so many of our customers that they are intentionally supporting small businesses. Especially because online shopping platforms, like Amazon, are very tough for small business owners to compete with. Add to it the convenience of shopping from home, small retail stores like ours struggle to match the ease that online platforms provide.

Running a brick-and-mortar shop involves a lot of overhead costs, Pangaea Outpost allows small businesses to forgo some of these operational costs, making it more affordable to maintain a physical storefront. By renting a small space at Pangaea rather than a whole facility, merchants can focus more on growing their business rather than just surviving. This retail store with 70+ shops under one roof is a model that helps artists, makers, and small businesses thrive and sell items on the main street in Pacific Beach when doing so alone would be cost prohibitive.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Something that comes to mind is what one of our store owners, Jeffery E. often reminds us “We are better together.” And we feel this mantra truly encapsulates our relationship with this incredible community and wonderful customers.
