Today we’d like to introduce you to Jim Sprouse.
Hi Jim, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
How It All Started
It was New Year’s a few years back — the kind of cold, clear night where the stars hit just right — and Jim and Ryan were out talking on the edge of the canyon. Jim lives out there, where the wind can change direction in seconds and fire danger is a constant backdrop. They got to asking one simple question: Why don’t homes come with wildfire mitigation built in?
It seemed obvious. If you live in the wildland-urban interface, you’re exposed. No one would build a house without a roof, right? So why were entire neighborhoods being left wide open to fire?
At first, we assumed the answer was “because there’s no industry.” But the deeper we dug, the more we realized — the industry does exist. It’s just fragmented, outdated, and largely invisible to homeowners. What should be proactive was only reactive. What should be a system was a mess.
That conversation turned into research, and research turned into strategy. We decided to build something that would make wildfire mitigation simple, accessible, and part of the way homes are protected going forward.
We built our company around a few core values:
Clarity — homeowners deserve to understand their risk and what to do about it.
Trust — we’re not pushing products, we’re delivering peace of mind.
Execution — this space needs operators, not talkers.
Impact — every house we protect is one less headline.
Things really took off after the Palisades Fire. People saw how fast it can happen. It wasn’t just in the foothills anymore — these fires were hitting communities that never thought they’d be in the path. Demand surged. Agencies called. Insurers called. So did neighbors.
From there, it snowballed. What started as a conversation on a canyon ridge became a platform, a team, and a mission. We’re now helping redefine what home protection looks like in the 21st century.
And we’re just getting started.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not a smooth road — and honestly, we wouldn’t trust it if it was.
Early on, one of the biggest challenges was just explaining what we did. People didn’t even know wildfire mitigation was a thing. We’d say, “We harden homes against fire,” and get blank stares. Or worse, “Oh, like defensible space?” It took a lot of education — showing folks the full picture: ember entry points, material vulnerabilities, vegetation spacing, ventilation, suppression systems — all of it. It’s not just clearing brush. It’s a system.
Another challenge was the market itself. It’s fragmented. Contractors didn’t talk to insurance. Fire departments didn’t talk to homeowners. Regulations were inconsistent, and incentives were non-existent. We had to build the connective tissue ourselves — sometimes literally inventing the process just to get a job done end-to-end.
Then there’s the tech side. Building the tools, building the network, building the workflows — it’s not like there was a playbook. We had to prototype fast, fail faster, and stay close to the ground. Feedback loops were everything. We’d finish a job, hear what worked (and what didn’t), and roll that into the next one.
And of course, there were moments where it felt like we were too early. Before the big fires, before the headlines, we were knocking on doors saying, “This is coming.” Some people got it. A lot didn’t — until it hit their neighborhood.
But through all of it, we’ve stayed close to the mission. Wildfire risk isn’t going away. If anything, it’s accelerating. And the more homes we protect, the more we see just how necessary this work really is. Every struggle has shaped how we operate today — faster, clearer, more scalable — but still grounded in that original question: Why aren’t homes built with this in mind?
Now, they can be.
We’ve been impressed with Ember Pro, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Ember Pro is a wildfire defense company. We harden homes and properties against wildfire — not just with brush clearing, but with a comprehensive, high-integrity approach that reduces risk before disaster strikes.
We specialize in end-to-end wildfire mitigation: structure hardening, vegetation management, real risk assessments, and project execution. Our team brings together fire science, construction, insurance, and boots-on-the-ground know-how. We’re not just consultants — we’re operators. We show up, get the work done, and bring homes into alignment with the growing reality of fire season.
What sets us apart is that we actually make this actionable. For too long, mitigation has been a vague checklist or a “maybe someday” task. We’ve turned it into a service — clear, accessible, and backed by real data and results. No scare tactics. Just smart, proactive protection.
We’re most proud of the trust we’ve built — not just with homeowners, but with insurers, fire departments, HOAs, and builders. We’re building the missing layer in home protection, and doing it with a brand that people actually want to engage with. This isn’t legacy fire prevention. This is Ember Pro: modern, fast, clean, and credible.
For homeowners, we offer wildfire risk assessments and property hardening services tailored to their zone and structure. For insurers and agencies, we provide scalable solutions to reduce loss exposure. And for the broader market, we’re helping define what fire-adapted communities actually look like.
We want your readers to know this: if you live in wildfire country, you don’t have to just hope your house survives. There is something you can do. And we’re here to help you do it.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The biggest lesson? You can have the best wildfire science, the most airtight mitigation plan, and the right tools — but at the end of the day, it all comes down to people.
One of the first things we realized was that most homeowners don’t want to deal with their defensible space. It’s not a priority until it’s urgent. And honestly, we get it — it’s confusing, time-consuming, and not exactly top of mind when you’re juggling work, family, and life. But fire doesn’t wait for the to-do list.
So we’ve had to get creative. We’ve built services that meet people where they are — clear, convenient, done-for-you solutions that take the friction out of protecting their home. We offer flexible packages, seasonal plans, neighborhood rollouts — whatever it takes to get real results, not just good intentions.
But above all, the biggest non-negotiable is customer service. No matter how technical this gets or how much we scale, that stays number one. People are trusting us with their homes — often their most valuable asset — and sometimes their safety. That kind of trust can’t be bought, only earned. So we show up, we communicate clearly, we do what we say we’ll do, and we make it easy.
The fire problem is big. But the human side of this — building trust, solving problems, actually helping people feel safe — that’s what drives us every day.
