Community Highlights: Meet Julie Freeman of Mindful Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Freeman.

Hi Julie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was an obese child, name-called and bullied and started my first diet at the age of nine with my folks. As I got older, struggling with dieting, bingeing, being unable to control my eating, I became curious about what made me tick! I did my undergrad in Nutrition, then went on to do my grad work in Counseling and Psychology. While this helped with my understanding of the emotional aspects, it still wasn’t enough to explain the full picture; thus I completed certifications in Mind-Body Medicine, Reiki, Yoga, Functional Medicine, then finally Genomics.

After years of not feeling well, I was finally diagnosed with rare leukemia, following year Lyme, then the next year with a serious staph infection that landed me ill for nearly nine months, quarantined for three of those months. It was during this time when I completely revamped my website and practice style and began using Skype for telehealth visits – long before the real advent of telehealth.

I now maintain a practice of entire telehealth given the current circumstances and in my practice, I see clients with chronic, complex illness who have often been underserved in the traditional medical model. My preference is to collaborate, to have all healthcare professionals communicating on behalf of the patient, but the current system is quite broken. I love what I do and know that whole health encompasses looking into the mind, body and spirit levels of well-being.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all! I knew early on in my undergrad studies that I did not want to be “the dietitian with hairnet in the basement of the hospital” and that the focus was on the disease model rather than health acquisition. My convoluted path has been more from an intuitive process as well as encountering my own serious health challenges. Many times, as the patient, I was told, “Boy, you are complicated!”

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a sole proprietor and have been in private practice for 21 years. I work independently but maintain many close collegial relationships, from physicians to acupuncurists, energy workers, massage therapists and mental health clinicians. I had maintained a general practice for years as I love working with all age groups, but I am now focusing on women’s health, as this is a very underserved area and one in which all of the specialty tools that I have can support women as they encounter challenges along the way. I am known for being thorough, compassionate, responsive and often the one who figures out the puzzle.

From my website – Mindful Wellness is my business and brand built on that personal touch when it comes to demystifying health challenges, emotional and spiritual dilemmas and creating an environment that is truly healing – from food to cleaning products and skincare that you use daily. Even your outer shell, the home, can be assessed for non-toxic upholstery and bedding. This is your oasis, a special place, from the inside out.

I offer a free 30-minute meeting to learn about a potential client’s needs and to assess if we will be a good fit. I will hand hold as needed, support, yet also need clients to know that this is a partnership – I will be all in! I offer individual sessions, packages and will work with families to support their health goals.

How do you think about happiness?
Connection! Seeing others feeling held, heard and understood. Being able to be outside every day and walk by the ocean. Being with my family – I have a two yo granddaughter who runs up to greet me! I love to sing – was a cantor for years, sang at most of the family and friend weddings, sang for my girls’ daycare and at school, my parents’ senior center, nursing homes. I love to feed people and I’ve written three cookbooks – gathering people together makes me happy! My health – I am so grateful for having gotten to the other side and want to share that with others.
