Today we’d like to introduce you to Karen K. Poon.
Hi Karen, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Before starting my spa, I worked as a bookkeeper. It was a stable job, but I wasn’t happy — and for a long time, I thought that’s just how life was supposed to be. I was never the type of person who grew up knowing exactly what I wanted to do. I would pick up any job I could, just trying to make things work.
Coming from a family that immigrated from South Korea, I was raised with the belief that we work to survive, not necessarily to enjoy what we do. But as I got older, I realized that my parents didn’t come to America just so I could live to work — they made sacrifices so that I could find a career that brings me both purpose and joy.
My older sister encouraged me to look into cosmetology, and that’s when esthetics fell into my hands — and everything suddenly made sense. I realized that I had skills I never recognized as valuable before: I’m a strong listener, I genuinely love people, and I find so much fulfillment in helping others feel confident and cared for.
That realization became the foundation of my spa. With the help and unwavering support of my husband, Calvin Poon, what began as uncertainty evolved into my passion and purpose. Today, I get to combine my love for people, healing, and skincare every single day — and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but I believe every challenge has shaped me into who I am today.
Starting a career in a completely new industry came with a lot of fear and self-doubt. There were moments when I questioned if I was good enough or if I had made the right decision leaving behind a stable career.
However, during the last stretch of school, I was blessed with a job at a sugaring spa in Bankers Hill — one of, if not the top sugaring spas in San Diego. I actually got the job while I was still in school, starting at the front desk until I graduated and earned my license. The owner of that spa saw something in me and told me she wanted to wait until I was licensed to bring me on as an esthetician, which meant the world to me.
Everyone there had over seven years of experience, so I definitely felt intimidated stepping into that environment. But at the same time, I felt confident because I knew I could sugar well and genuinely cared for my clients. That experience taught me so much about professionalism, client connection, and what it takes to be exceptional in this industry.
We’ve been impressed with The Willow Sugaring and Skin, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is all about creating an experience that goes beyond skincare — it’s about connection, healing, and helping people feel confident in their own skin. I specialize in result-driven, customized facials that combine clinical-grade products with a nurturing, relaxing touch. I use professional lines like GlyMed Plus, Eminence, and Oxygen Ceuticals, and every treatment is tailored to what the client’s skin truly needs that day.
One of the things that truly sets my spa apart is that I offer the GENEOX Glo2Facial, a next-generation oxygenating treatment that delivers incredible skin rejuvenation and long-lasting glow. It’s a rare find in San Diego — I’m proud to be one of the few spas in San Diego offering this advanced treatment. My goal is to be known as the spa for Glo2, where clients can experience its full benefits in a personalized and luxurious setting.
Beyond the treatments, what makes my spa special is the care and attention each client receives. I take time to really listen, educate, and build trust. Many of my clients tell me that our sessions feel like therapy for both their skin and soul — and that means everything to me.
I’m most proud of how the brand represents authenticity and heart. I didn’t start this business just to offer facials and sugaring; I wanted to create a space where people could slow down, feel seen, and leave not only glowing on the outside but also feeling lighter on the inside.
At the core of my business is intention — every product, every touch, every detail has purpose. I want readers to know that when they visit, they’re not just getting a facial — they’re experiencing care, healing, and transformation that’s personal to them.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I see the esthetics and skincare industry continuing to evolve toward more personalized, results-driven, and technology-integrated treatments. Clients are increasingly looking for services that deliver both immediate results and long-term benefits, while providing a luxurious, relaxing experience. This means advanced devices, like my Glo2 machine, and professional-grade products will continue to be highly sought-after.
I’m also thrilled to share that Jillian Lagasse recently joined my team. Not only is she an incredible esthetician with over 20 years of worldwide experience, but she’s also an amazing partner-in-crime. Together, we’re dreaming big — we want to reach as many people as we can and heal as many faces as possible.
Looking ahead, I see a continued focus on holistic wellness — treatments that support both skin health and overall well-being — as well as education-driven experiences, where clients understand their skin and maintain results at home. We have big dreams to grow The Willow Spa, potentially opening multiple locations, even in different cities, while staying true to our mission: combining science, technology, and genuine care to deliver transformative, personalized, and meaningful experiences.
