Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie McGinley.
Hi Katie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always been fascinated with birth culture and assisting others in times of great change. Being able to cultivate ways to bring people together during transformational times feels like my greatest life’s purpose. I’ve reached a point where I’m ready to follow my passions and build a business at the intersection of everything I love and value.
One of the most transformative times, new parenthood, is something we desperately need more support options for in the U.S. Not only are we experiencing some of the loneliest times people have ever felt, we also have systems that perpetuate a narrative that postpartum families should “bounce back” or “do it all.” In Western culture, it’s normal to take care of your baby all by yourself from day one.
Post Pamper, a postpartum retreat, came to life while envisioning and reimagining postpartum care in the U.S. Many countries around the world have social safety nets, government subsidies, or more care options for families welcoming children. Postpartum retreats, hotels, and centers are common in other parts of the world yet feel like a radical concept in America.
The U.S. is one of two countries in the developed world that doesn’t have mandatory paid family leave. One out of every four moms goes back to work within two weeks of giving birth, which feels like a dire crisis. The expectation to do it all is by design and makes families feel like it’s a personal failure if they can’t manage. The truth is, we’re all doing the very best we can to take care of our families and ourselves, but it’s never enough because we’re supposed to have more support infrastructure.
It’s time to shift our culture towards embracing community as immunity and finding ways to bring back the concept of a village. At Post Pamper, we refer to parenthood with the highest reverence and honor. Nurturing the next generation starts with how we care for the parents who raise them. That’s why we want to support and pamper families during postpartum. When a parent receives the care and support, they deserve, they can show up stronger for their new baby and loved ones.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Overall, I’ve been really lucky in finding the right partnerships to bring Post Pamper to life. I find that when we operate from our heart space and listen to our intuition, we naturally attract and find others equally as passionate.
Of course, being a solo founder of a startup has its challenges. Most days, I’m just extremely grateful to be in a position that I can go after this opportunity with a full heart and strong belief in it. The work excites me, and any challenges feel solvable when the bigger picture is serving the community in such an impactful way.
As you know, we’re big fans of Post Pamper. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
Post Pamper is a postpartum retreat where care professionals support and pamper families during postpartum. Our retreat offers a peaceful and nurturing adjustment for new and growing families with a range of postnatal care experts in a luxury hotel.
We’ve partnered with Noble House Hotels to host retreats all across San Diego. The hotels include Estancia La Jolla, L’Auberge Del Mar, Mission Bay Resort, and Kona Kai Shelter Island. Families can check in any time within the 8 weeks after birth. Retreat guests will receive 24/7 doula care, nourishing meals delivered with room service, feeding and lactation support, an overnight nursery, newborn and postpartum education, and in-room massage. Plus, a luxurious hotel room that promotes rest, recovery, and space to bond with baby. Parents can take away the mental load of meal planning, household chores, and navigating any challenges that arise during postpartum by being surrounded by our care team.
How do you define success?
“Success is the progressive realization of a worthy goal or ideal” is a quote that I love. For me, there’s no such thing as something or someone being more “successful” than another.
A key to happiness and success is finding the best fit for you, which only you can know. Figure out what lights you up, and remember that we all have unique gifts or talents to share with our communities. A successful individual is someone who is actively taking steps toward a vision they have deemed meaningful for themselves.
