Community Highlights: Meet Kimberly Weinreich of Dr. Kim

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Weinreich.

Hi Kimberly, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in London, UK, with an American father and an Indonesian mother. When my mother was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in her twenties, she chose to manage her health through what many would call “alternative” medicine. Because of that, holistic care was part of daily life for me. I grew up assuming everyone I knew had a homeopath, herbalist, or acupuncturist.

Personally, acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine played a meaningful role in my own wellbeing from a young age. Herbs supported my skin health when I started getting teenage acne, and acupuncture became invaluable when I began navigating difficult menstrual cycles. These early experiences planted seeds that I didn’t fully recognize at the time, but they stayed with me.

After completing my undergraduate degree, I explored several career paths in London, including working as a makeup artist for print publications, movies, music videos and TV. When my husband and I moved to San Diego in 2013, I was in my late twenties and fully immersed myself in the lifestyle. Living by the beach, working in restaurants, and eventually doing makeup for women at a boudoir photography studio. It was there that something clicked. Many of the women who sat in my chair arrived nervous and unsure of themselves. I took it as my role to supprt them and help them feel their best before they stepped out in front of the camera. While makeup was part of the transformation it was clear that our conversations and the human connection played an even bigger role. I realized how powerful it was to help someone feel seen, supported, confident, and comfortable in their own skin and I knew I wanted to do that on a deeper, more lasting level.

That realization eventually led me to begin my doctorate in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine. It felt like the perfect way to integrate my personal history, my love of human connection, and my desire to support people holistically. During my training, I had the opportunity to work closely with my mentor, Dr. Deb Davies, a renowned perinatal acupuncturist. That experience profoundly shaped my understanding of reproductive health, pregnancy, and birth, and ignited a deep passion for supporting people through these transformative life stages.

I had my first child in 2019 while still in school, and was blessed to get to experience three pregnancies and births over the following 4 years. Becoming a mother was the greatest transformation in my life and further deepened my commitment this work.

Just before my last son was born, I completed an additional certification in Cosmetic and Facial Acupuncture and completely fell in love with this area of practice. It felt like a full circle moment where I got to blend aesthetics, usung human connection to help clients build confidence and holistic medicine in a way that aligned with my values.

Today, I practice acupuncture in Pacific Beach and La Mesa, with a strong focus on reproductive and hormonal health as well as cosmetic acupuncture and holistic microneedling, approaching beauty and graceful aging as an extension of overall health and vitality. My goal is to help people feel supported, empowered, and confident, inside and out, through every stage of life.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road. For a long time, it felt like I was moving through multiple careers without fully settling into one. There were many moments of self doubt, and times when I questioned whether I was on the right path, before I settled on holistic medicine. Looking back now, I can see that every experience I had was preparing me for this medicine and this work.

One of the most challenging chapters was being pregnant, for the first time, while in school in 2018. The postgraduate doctorate for acupuncture and chinese medicine already requires management of an intense academic and clinical workload, let alone adding nausea, exhaustion and the feeling of overwhelm that can come with expecting your first child. I often think about a conversation I had in school, just before I took a semester off to give birth and recover. A peer told me that I probably wouldn’t return. He said that “most mothers don’t”. I remember thinking very clearly, “just watch me”. That moment stayed with me because I knew then that I was capable of doing very hard things, even when others project limitations onto me. I returned, I finished, and I built a practice that reflects both my resilience and my values.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Dr. Kim?
I practice acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine in Pacific Beach and La Mesa. My specialized areas are reproductive health including fertility support (both natural and alongside reproductive medicine), prenatal and postpartum care. As well as aesthetic care through Cosmetic Acupuncture and Holistic Microneedling.

What truly defines my practice is my commitment to supporting people through some of the most significant and vulnerable transitions of their lives. Whether someone is preparing for pregnancy, navigating postpartum recovery, balancing hormones, or seeking to feel more confident and at home in their body, my goal is always to help them feel supported, informed, and empowered to thrive at every stage.

I intentionally practice under my own name because I plan to remain a small, local business. I value one-on-one care and real human connection, and I believe those elements are an essential part of the healing process. My patients are never rushed or treated as a number. Each treatment plan is individualized, adaptable, and grounded in both Traditional Chinese Medicine and modern clinical understanding.

What I want readers to know is that acupuncture and chinese medicine is about more than just symptom relief or surface level results. To me, it is about supporting each person physically, emotionally, and energetically so they can feel confident and resilient through every chapter of life.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I think risk is an essential part of growth, both in life and entrepreneurship. In my life, I think the biggest risk I’ve taken so far was moving from London to San Diego. Leaving behind a career, close friendships, and a supportive family to start fresh in a new country, without a clear plan, was not a decision taken lightly. My husband and I spent about a year preparing for the move. Including spending 3 months in San Diego to be sure it felt right.

At our leaving celebration in London, when so many friends told us they wished they could do what we were doing. I told them “honestly, you can you just have to get clear on what it is you really want”. That belief has stayed with me.

For me, risk isn’t always about impulsivity. I believe you can still approach risk with intention and preparation. Trusting yourself to step forward when something aligns and feels like the right decision for you.
