Community Highlights: Meet Kyle Albini of Footbreaks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Albini

Hi Kyle, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
In 2013, I made a bold decision—I left my job as an outside sales representative for a food distributor to pursue something completely different: leading multi-day group trips across North America. Behind the wheel of a Ford Transit 350 van, towing a trailer packed with camping gear, I spent the next four years guiding travelers from around the world through the vast deserts of the Southwest, the iconic national parks, and the vibrant cities stretching from coast to coast. It was an adventure of a lifetime, and from the very start, I knew I wanted to create something of my own one day.

After years of embracing a nomadic lifestyle, I found myself at a crossroads—continue leading trips or return to the stability of a 9-to-5 job? Seeking clarity, I set out on the Camino de Santiago, a centuries-old pilgrimage across Spain. Over 35 days, I walked from the Pyrenees to the Atlantic Ocean at Finisterre, immersing myself in the simplicity of movement, the power of human connection, and the joy of slowing down. It was a transformational experience, one that solidified my passion for travel and community.

Returning home, I channeled my experience into the group travel industry, working on an operations team for a tour operator where I trained and supported trip leaders. Then, the world changed. COVID-19 devastated the travel industry, forcing me to pivot once again. I landed a role as an account manager at a travel tech startup in Portland, selling group trips to content creators. For three years, I immersed myself in this growing company, but the itch to return to the Camino never left me.

In 2023, I listened to that calling and set out on the Portuguese Camino. Along the walk, a fellow traveler asked me, “What do you really want to do with your life?” The question lingered in my mind with every step. The answer was clear—I wanted to build something of my own, something that blended my love for travel, walking, and bringing people together.

When I returned to San Diego, I decided to go for it. I looked around and saw the potential to recreate the magic of the Camino right here in my own backyard. And with that, Footbreaks was born.

Footbreaks is more than just a walking group—it’s a community. It’s about exploring San Diego on foot, from its vibrant neighborhoods to its breathtaking coastline, while fostering connection, movement, and well-being. Our walks aren’t just about seeing the city; they’re about experiencing it—step by step.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been anything but a straight path—more like a winding trail with unexpected turns, just like the walks we do at Footbreaks. Any solopreneur can probably relate—long hours, pivoting stratgies, and unexpected costs are just part of the journey. I spent much of 2024 getting all my ducks in a row, but the hardest hurdle wasn’t logistics—it was battling self-doubt and imposter syndrome. For months, I hesitated, questioning whether I was really ready to take the plunge.

But I’m so glad I did.

Starting Footbreaks has been one of the most rewarding decisions I’ve ever made. The support from family, friends, and even strangers who have shown up to walk with me has been incredible. Seeing this community grow—step by step—reminds me why I started in the first place. Every challenge along the way has been worth it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Footbreaks is more than just a walking group—it’s a community built around movement, connection, and exploration. We offer active walking meetups throughout San Diego that highlight the city’s stunning landscapes and vibrant neighborhoods while promoting both physical and mental well-being.

Inspired by the Camino de Santiago, Footbreaks is designed for anyone looking to experience San Diego in a unique way—whether you’re new to the city and eager to explore, searching for meaningful connections, or navigating a life transition and in need of a fresh perspective. Our walks provide a space to slow down, step away from the daily grind, and rediscover what truly moves you—both physically and emotionally.

What sets Footbreaks apart is our belief that walking isn’t just exercise—it’s a way to reset, reflect, and reconnect. Our meetups bring together people from all walks of life, creating a welcoming and supportive space where conversations flow as freely as the miles underfoot.

We’re most proud of the community we’re building—a space where strangers become friends, inspiration is found in every step, and people walk away feeling lighter, stronger, and more connected. At Footbreaks, we don’t just walk—we move with purpose, we explore with intention, and we create meaningful moments along the way.

So whether you’re looking to break away from your everyday routine, meet like-minded adventurers, or simply take in San Diego at your own pace—come walk with us.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
Even though I started Footbreaks as a solopreneur, I certainly haven’t been walking this path alone. The support, encouragement, and guidance I’ve received from friends, family, and former colleagues have been invaluable in getting Footbreaks off the ground.

My family has been my biggest cheerleader, always encouraging me to take the leap and believe in this vision. Former trip passengers I once led have reached out with kind words, reminding me why I love bringing people together through travel and shared experiences. My former coworkers have also played a huge role—offering business setup advice, sharing their expertise in areas beyond my depth, helping me refine my website, providing feedback on my copy, and guiding me through the behind-the-scenes work that goes into building a brand.

It’s these connections—past and present—that have kept me moving forward, one step at a time. Footbreaks may have started as my idea, but it’s been shaped and strengthened by the people who’ve believed in it alongside me. I’m incredibly grateful for the support system that continues to walk with me on this journey.
