Today we’d like to introduce you to Leela Schrayter.
Hi Leela, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Growing up the middle of five children and having what would be called an unconventional childhood, I’ve always leaned towards following a different path. From a young age, I felt a really strong connection to the power of touch, and in high school, kids would toss me a few dollars to work on a knot or two. It was many years after that before I finally believed in myself enough to head to massage school, but it happened at the perfect time and strengthened my love for helping people through touch. Finding my way to San Diego was another journey entirely, and one that took place during the summer of 2020 when most of the world was shut down. I’m a skydiving coach and one of approximately 100 female tandem skydive instructors in the United States, and skydiving was one of the only things still open at the time. It’s always been a sort of therapy for me, and following the skies led me here. Not only that, but it was a chance encounter with a fellow skydiver who believed in me that led to my studio, Blue Skies Bodywork (thank you, James of True Form Fitness!). He found my perfect little spot by the sea in Del Mar and helped me start the new year as a small business owner.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Massage has always come easy to me, and I’ve been told by many people that I have strong intuition with my work. But the road to San Diego and finally having my own space hasn’t been the smoothest. Moving across the country during the pandemic, when my field was shut down along with countless others was a huge struggle financially and otherwise. I also experienced some mental health battles that ultimately led to finding my happy place and truly being proud of who I am as a person, but at the time, it left me feeling pretty bleak. Through it all, the amazing friend group I have on this coast was invaluable. They were so supportive and helped me through it; they found me work at a skydiving center and a veterinary office so I could weather the storm and were truly there for me when I needed them the most. It really does take a village, and I’m so grateful for everyone in mine.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Blue Skies Bodywork?
Blue Skies Bodywork is the name of my massage studio. The name comes from a skydiving term where we wish each other blue skies because that’s the perfect day for jumping out of some not-so-perfect airplanes. And who doesn’t want a perfect day to do what they love? I specialize in customized massage with a combination of pressure and techniques because I don’t think any one modality on its own works best for most clients. Instead, I believe the best massage is a blend formed by my intuition and communication with each and every client. I offer massage both in-studio and from the comfort of my client’s own homes, both by appointment only. I offer cupping, hot stones, CBD, and aromatherapy as add-ons. What makes me most proud is knowing I bring my passion and my love of intuitive and healing touch to each and every massage. It’s not just a job — it’s my passion, and it matters to me that you get off my table feeling refreshed and better than when we started.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Life. Life makes me happy. Mornings watching the sunrise because I’m grateful for another day. My work because I’m able to help others and bring relief and joy in this sometimes-difficult world. Skydiving because it gives me wings. My dog, Kalea, because she saved me. My family, because they are the best bunch of humans. My friends, because they support me through the good and the bad. And hiking because it cleanses my soul. I guess you could say a lot makes me happy!
