Today we’d like to introduce you to Lydia Pualani Ornelas.
Hi Lydia Pualani, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey has been an incredible evolution, moving from being a regional chef and partner of a vegan restaurant group (the plot – Oceanside) to becoming a private chef and now stepping into the paramedical tattooing industry. In my 20year + culinary career, I was guided by principles of care and sustainability practicing zero waste, sourcing produce from our onsite garden and local regenerative farms, and creating food that nourished both body and soul. That same passion for creating meaningful impact has shaped my transition into paramedical tattooing.
As a licensed paramedical tattoo specialist and also certified in PMU, my work now is about helping people heal physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I’ve always believed that confidence and self love are some of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves, and paramedical tattooing allows me to be a vessel for that transformation. Whether I’m camouflaging scars, blending stretch marks, lightening scars or restoring balance to skin imperfections, I know I’m doing more than just tattooing I’m giving people a piece of themselves back.
This work feels deeply purposeful, almost divine. To help someone look in the mirror and feel whole again is nothing short of sacred. It’s about restoring dignity, confidence, and the belief that they are beautiful and worthy just as they are. I approach every client with care, humility, and gratitude for the trust they place in me. This journey has been life changing, and I truly feel I’ve found my calling helping others see the light within themselves and reminding them that they are deserving of joy, confidence, and love.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Transitioning from a regional chef to a paramedical tattooing specialist has been a rewarding journey, but it hasn’t been without its challenges. One of the biggest obstacles was stepping away from an industry where I had established myself. After years of pouring my heart into creating sustainable, zero waste dining experiences and collaborating with regenerative farms, I had to leave behind the familiarity of the culinary world and start from scratch in an entirely new field.
Another challenge was mastering the technical and artistic aspects of paramedical tattooing. Unlike cooking, where ingredients and flavors were my tools, I had to learn to work with human skin a living, breathing canvas. Achieving the precision and skill required for powdered ombré brows and scar camouflage treatments took intense training, dedication, and countless hours of practice. It was humbling to become a student again after years of being an expert in my previous field.
Building trust with clients was another hurdle. In the culinary world, people trust your food instantly when it’s placed in front of them, but paramedical tattooing involves something far more personal and permanent. I had to earn my clients’ confidence, not just with my skills but with my ability to empathize and connect with their stories of vulnerability and healing.
Finally, balancing my sense of purpose in both careers was a challenge. I loved creating food that nourished others, and I worried I might lose that sense of fulfillment in my transition. What I’ve realized, though, is that the core of my work helping others feel whole, confident, and cared for has stayed the same. It’s just taken on a new form. These obstacles, though challenging, have made the journey even more meaningful and have shown me the strength that comes from pursuing a calling that aligns with your heart.
