Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Kucherenko.
Hi Maria , it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I began my modeling career in Russia at the age of 13. By 16, I had become a trainer, helping new models develop their skills. After earning a master’s degree in Acting and Directing, I started working as a director for fashion shows and beauty pageants.
At 26, I was already working in Europe, Russia, and China as a model, runway trainer, and show director. During this time, I decided to move to the United States to pursue new opportunities.
Relocating was challenging. I had to learn English and understand the American modeling industry, which is quite different from other parts of the world. Despite these challenges, I was determined to succeed.
In 2022, I founded my own Academy “American Modeling Academy” to train aspiring models and industry professionals. At the Academy we train 5 different types of walking technique, print modeling, commercial modeling, directing of fashion shows, professional make up, modeling backstage rules 101, and safety rules. I started in San Diego, and within a year, I expanded to four locations. Today, I continue to work in the industry as a fashion adviser for Fashion Week San Diego, as a runway trainer to Silver Fashion show, still working as a model at the age of 42, while helping others achieve their goals.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The journey has not always been smooth. Moving to a new country and adapting to a different culture and industry was challenging. Learning English and understanding the nuances of the American modeling scene took time and effort. There were moments of uncertainty and obstacles in establishing myself in a new environment.
Additionally, building a business from scratch and expanding to multiple locations required perseverance and dedication. Despite these struggles, each challenge taught me valuable lessons and made me stronger. Overall, the difficulties shaped my resilience and fueled my passion to succeed and help others in the industry.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
What I like best about San Diego is its beautiful weather and stunning beaches. The city has a relaxed and welcoming vibe, which makes it a great place to live and work. I also appreciate the diverse community and the opportunities for growth in the fashion and entertainment industries.
What I like least is that sometimes the traffic can be challenging, especially during peak hours. Additionally, the cost of living is quite high, which can be difficult for some residents. Despite that, I still love San Diego and enjoy everything it has to offer.
