Today we’d like to introduce you to Mariah Torres
Mariah, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up I was always an athlete. I participated in many different sports but ended up sticking with volleyball in high school and through college. It was during these years that I formed a love for an active lifestyle. When I finished playing volleyball in college, I quickly noticed how my life was missing something. I started creating my own workouts and getting back into the gym, so I could bring back that familiar active lifestyle. I went on to graduate from college with a degree in Environmental Studies, however once I started looking for jobs I was met with dissatisfaction at the thought of having to be inside an office full-time. To me that meant once again having to give up the lifestyle I loved so much and became so passionate about. This ultimately lead me looking for other options in the field of health and wellness. I found functional nutrition and felt an instant connection and new passion. Once I started studying functional nutrition, I started to apply this knowledge to my own life and noticed drastic differences in my health. It was through my own experience and using the knowledge I had gained, that I knew I had to help others take charge over their own health.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road. There are many different challenges that I have faced and I am sure there are more to come, however, it’s a journey I am so thankful for and would not change a thing. Once I started studying functional nutrition, I became overwhelmed with how much information there was to learn. Being that functional nutrition utilizes an individualized approach, I was nervous for how I would be able to apply this information with clients. I also started my instagram page not only for my business but also just to share information regarding health and wellness information, which added extra pressure on top of having to study. Figuring out how I can best serve others also has taken some trial and errors.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Connected Roots ?
Connected Roots is the name of my Functional Nutrition practice. I am a certified Functional Nutritionist who helps individuals identify their roots causes of their health signs and symptoms they are experiencing by modifying and enhancing both diet and lifestyle. Functional nutrition works NOT by using protocols or only relying on supplements but by addressing the full terrain of the body and optimizing function. The best analogy is thinking about a plant; with our symptoms being a branch, we must examine the soil of the plant in order to address and prevent further branches becoming weak or fragile. While functional nutrition may be used to help many different aspects of health, the ultimate goal is longevity and sustainable health where one feels like their best selves each and every day, I specifically love helping women and athletes. Having gone through my own health challenges dealing with gut issues, hormone imbalances, and other complications, I understand how confusing and frustrating it can be to try and figure things out all while dealing with complex symptoms that can and do play a huge part of daily living. I love working with those who are not only trying to better their health but who are also looking to learn how to take an active approach towards bettering themselves. When working with clients I really place an emphasis on it’s not what you eat, it’s what your body can do with what you’re eating. I love guiding others on how they can start to feel empowered about their health and really learn how to connect with their body to understand what they need not just to survive but to thrive. One thing I want readers to know about Connected Roots is through the use of functional nutrition, I am able to work with clients to create a personalized plan that will help them not only get the results they want but set them up for a long-term sustainable health.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
I love Carlsbad and all the beauty that is here. I wake up every day feeling so thankful to live in such a beautiful place alongside the best people. Having so many different things to do whether its go to the beach, village, or visit neighboring cities, there is always something new and exciting! The thing I like the least about our city is that it is a tourist destination hot spot, which brings in lots of traffic and packed beaches, but I do not blame others for wanting to visit this beautiful city of ours!
