Community Highlights: Meet Mel Adams of Binz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mel Adams

Hi Mel, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was born and raised in San Diego. After graduating college in 2018 with a business degree, I pursued a career in the sports industry – that took me to Dallas and then Northern California. After a few years there and serious burnout, I moved back down to San Diego to join my family’s business in apparel manufacturing as the Business Operations Manager, which is currently where I work.

I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit and desired something different than working a “9-5” job. I’ve dabbled with various business ideas over the past couple years, but nothing stuck with me. I floated around a wide range of service-focused businesses, but I was talking with a friend a few months ago about how much of a pain moving can be. Specifically the mountains of cardboard boxes you accumulate – having to go buy them, assembly, breakdown, then getting rid of them. What if someone is physically unable to do those things? It can be very wasteful and an added hassle for people. That’s essentially where I came up with the idea for Binz.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Fortunately I haven’t run into any serious operational obstacles, but Binz is still young so I’m sure they’ll come about eventually. My biggest struggle, though, was believing in my idea of Binz enough to start it. And commit to it. I’m a bit of an over thinker, so I’m very conscious of the fact that I can psych myself out into not pursuing an idea. I’ve got a great group of friends and family though that were supportive of Binz, so that gave me an extra boost of confidence as well.

I like to remind myself: you’re never going to feel 100% ready or prepared. If you’re waiting for that, you’re never going to start. So just start and figure it out as you go!

As you know, we’re big fans of Binz. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Binz is a more hassle-free and environmentally-friendly alternative to buying a bunch of cardboard boxes for a move. I offer rentable bins and dollies that are delivered to your door, and picked up from your new home when you’re finished unpacking. No assembly, no tape, no breakdown, and no figuring out how to get rid of them – all of the joys that come with buying a bunch of cardboard boxes! The dollies make it easy to stack and roll them, especially if you’re in an apartment complex. Plus, Binz are super sturdy, so you don’t have to worry about the bottoms falling out or handles tearing (unfortunately I know from personal experience).

I’m able to get hundreds of uses out of one Binz bin, while the life cycle of a cardboard box, realistically, is one or two uses before it gets thrown away. As a community, San Diego has fully embraced reusable water bottles and grocery totes, so why not for our moves too? I think of it as the future of moving.

Being born and raised in North County, I’m really excited to grow Binz here and share it with the community. Binz services San Diego County and is currently out and about making deliveries to homes and businesses. Binz are primarily rented by people who are moving to a new home or office, but they can also be rented for home renovations, events, or expos. Binz is also looking forward to partnering with property managers to reduce cardboard box waste in their communities and provide a more positive move-in experience for their residents.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
It’s hard to pick one thing I like the most! The obvious answer is the weather. But, I’ve lived in different regions of the country, and while they were amazing experiences, there’s just nothing like San Diego. There’s an unbeatable vibe here. Very upbeat. Active community. Great food and drink scene. Fun sports teams. Endless list of new things to try. Too hard to pick one!

What do I like least? Racking my brain, but if I have to pick something, I’ll go with: when it “rains” just enough to make your car dirty, lol!
